I have a 1987 Mayfair and my handbrake is very poor. I know on some old cars the handbrake can be tightened easily with a tool that looks very similar to a spanner but with square ends.

Can I use this tool for a mini? and is it easy to do??

yes you can the adjuster are on the drums at the top easy to get to but u can adjust from the handle

you only need a 10mm spanner look at the back of the handbrake handle theres a nut turn it to reduce the length of the cable and thus the less movement needed

Make sure the rear brakes are properly adjusted before trying to set the handbrake cable.

The tool you describe is a brake adjusting spanner. The drum brakes on a Mini need regular adjustment to keep them working effectively, it also effects the foot brake. I'd get a proper spanner and have a go, the adjusters are prone to seizing if left for long. If the handbrake just doesn't hold but doesn't pull up to the the end of the ratchet the cable and its swivels probably need easing off and greasing.

Doing it properly is a quick fix, and more permanent, AND it'll make your brakes work properly.

Slacken off handbrake cable, adjust drums, reset handbrake, it's been answered many times, is probably in FAQ, and is also in Haynes.
