Hi!

Has anybody tried the NEW 165/70R10 S Dunlop SP Sport Aquajet yet?
It's the reincarnation of the OLD Aquajet from the 70's.

I've heared some storys about the OLD tyre being terrible - what's with the reincarnation?
Can it compete with say Falken FK-07E or Yokohama A008?

Had these on my Mini when I bought it, they were terrible!! Not tooo bad in the dry, but if the road was wet, damp or greasy they were just scary. Not progressive at all, would just let go, and not even when you were pushing it either. On sections of road that I knew could be greasy when damp I had to be very cautious! Wouldn't recommend them at all, and the Yoko A008s, and A032s I eventually replaced them with were far, far better in every way. I will say though that they must be quite a hard compound because they hardly wore at all.

Thanks Jammy! That doesn't sound like I want them... :P
Even thought they look rather sexy :P

A008 is a brilliant tyre! IMO the best 10" tyre for daily use & fun ^_^

We've got them on my dad's '68, and they are certainly not the best. performed pretty much as jammy says, and funnily enough, we've replaced them with the Yokohama A008's which are great!

I had Falkens 145-10 on 4.5" Cooper wheels. It's a 1959 Mini with 115BHP.

They were quite ok, but I loved the look of the Dunlop Auquajets (145-10).

So, puchesed 4 and test drove them. It scared the s#!t out of me. Freaking instable, especially changing lanes at more than 60 km/h.

Just ordered Marshals, Just to see if they are better than the Falkens....

Thread revival? Just noticed the 2009 date before the previous post!

If you want a classic looking tread pattern try the Dunlop R7 which look like the famous 1960's CR65 race tyre.

Expensive but also a very good all round performance tyre:-

Falkens OK with 115BHP ??? the Marshals will be better as would Khumo`s. Are you on 3.5" wheels or 4.5"`s ? If you are on the 3.5"`s that would explain why you would not get on with the Dunlops.  The maximum 1.5 degrees of neg camber on the front helps, not just 1.5 arms fitted.

I have used the Dunlop 145/80R10 tyres on two minis for about five years now on 4.5" reverse rims and S wheels running 30 PSI all round.
I purchased them for the period looks over performance as we all do or we would all buy Yoko`s which are the best.
When the tyres are newly fitted they do indeed feel a little squirmy due to the deep radial tread pattern but they settle in after a while but you still get the feeling of increased body roll as the tread rolls before biting in but they do bite in and grip quite well
Modern tyre technology has come a long way since the 60`s so going back to a classic pattern will have its compromises but when you get fully acquainted with the Dunlops they give very good grip and the wet grip is far superior to the Falkens that were a bit lethal in the wet.
I managed to lift a rear wheel on quarry corner at Castle Combe a couple of years ago on the Dunlops so they can`t be that bad but you do have to adjust your driving technique to suit the tyres with enough power to slide into a corner and accelerate out dragging the rears into submission and aggressive lane changing at speed is out unless you want to pass someone sideways.
On my MK3 the tyres are about 2/3rds worn now and the edges are a bit chewed up at around 5500 miles. The mk2 Cooper tyres are still like new as its not a daily drive.

All in all for sensible road use on a much loved early mini or trailer queen they are a good tyre but if you want to go hard and fast its Yokohama all the way. I have not personally tried the R7 but its obvious they will be a far better tyre than the Aquajets and I will probably try them next time but its a shame they dont do them in 145 size and its the same problem with the Yoko`s.
