I am skint! and the lucas alternator I bought from halfords 2 years ago is making a noise.

My question is is it difficult to strip and replace the bearings? I was thinking of taking them to the local bearing supplier and saving a few precious pounds.. I've only done dynamos before and alternators are a mystery to me.

Just get it overhauled by a good local auto electricians as it'll cost a fair bit less than an exchange unit. So it's probably not worth bothering fiddling with it yourself?

read the sale of goods act, then take it back to them and get it reapired or replaced.
an alternator should last for AT LEAST five years

they are very simple to change. just unscrew the voltage regulator from the back of the alt. 3 screws. ally bit on the back. take care not to snap the carbon brushes when you remove this. then unscrew the through bolts that hold the two ally end casings to either side of the stator. tap out bearings. poss retaining plates to take off them first too.

in all honesty i wouldnt bother though for what you can pick them alternators up for now. think the last one i bought was about £30 brand new with 12 month warranty.

Gingerjoe has just done one of these - take a look in the projects section for his engine build thread

Thanks for your input lads. I went past minispares and picked up a new outright unit with pullys for just under £40.

Now I can fit that and rebuild my old unit! I will have to as i don't have the receipt.. got 500+receipts but not that perticular one!
