Engines don't give you 0-60 times. A complete car and driver does. My Nan in a Maclaren F1 would probably hit 60 in about 3 minutes. An average drive in a standard Mini with an average 1380 might be able to do 60mph in 7-10 seconds.

in 1380? Easy I'd say, mildly tuned as well, stripped out... I reckon you could do it easily. 1380s do about 96(?)bhp as standard, add in some uprated pistons, cam, blah blah you could easily put out 110+bhp. Don't know how that converts into 0-60 times but safely to say it's pretty rapid.

you gotta remember, the mini could be very light.

Standard pistons won't last long with more than about 70bhp, with 100bhp you'll needed to have used uprated pistons anyway, 21253s or better. Also you won't get anywhere near 100bhp with the standard cam (N/A). again you'll needed to have used a fair duration cam to begin with.

6 second 0-60s you'll need good traction, and about 200bhp per tonne, some favourable gearing would help too.

MMM what about the 90bhp conversion kits you get using standard pistions? They have more than 70 and last fine?

OK, let's say you've got a Close ratio box, yoko aa048s on a dry ride, completely stripped, rear beam instead of subframe, alloy trailing arms, anything you can replaced with alloy. 500kgs car, 110bhp 1380, 5s 0-60 :)

Good point. All I can say is that its quite well known that very few of the JCW conversions achieved the 90bhp they were meant to bring. Can't remember where I've read it, but I'm sure I've seen something by either AC Dodd, or Calver that says you should use standard pistons up to about 70bhp, then 21251s for between 70 and 90, 21213s over that, and much over 100 you should be really looking at Mega and Omega pistons.

They didnt reach 90 but most were in the 80's. Pistons can be quite strong if treated right. If abused then even omega pistons can break. Especially if the engine isnt setup correctly.

It is all very confusing.

My race twincam 1380 (500kg car, 4.1 diff, 170bhp, slicks, launch control) is expected to do it in 4 - 5 seconds

So a normal 1380 will struggle in 6

id take whatever your mate says with a pinch of salt! Theres alot of 'my cars better than yours' kinda people out there, and at the end of the day all mini's
are different, much like all cars really, theres never 2 cars the same out of a factory!
Id just let him carry on, doesnt make him any better and if he's lying, he will just end up lookind stupid!!

I'd say it's achievable to be honest. I'd estimate that my 1380 would hit 60 at around the 7-8 second mark, but I've never actually timed it. It's not a 'standard' 1380 by any means, but it's not anything that special really.

It all depends on:

driver
gearing
cam
head
engine being properly setup
engine output
grip
weight of car and driver combined

not saying this is 100% but if you put the weight of the car in and the amount of HP it roughly works out some figures. Used this for my supra and its about right....
