Hi guys,

Reading the Haynes lastnight on re-assembly of the engine and first up it looks like the crankshaft! :D

Mentions using platigauge to measure tolerances, found the website:

but my question is, which "kit" do i need?!?!?!

Any help appreciated!

Wouldn't bother, use feeler gauges like any normal person...

The tolerance you'll need to check on the crank when fitting is the endfloat on the thrust bearings.. ( the 1/2 moon thrusts around the center main cap ), can't remeber off the top of my head the actual tolerance, but fit the thrusts you have and then run a feeler between the thrust and the crank, remember to check in different places and rotate the crank. You could also use a DTI to measure this endfloat, same with the Primary gear endfloat.

So as my crankshaft is not having a regrind it's just a case of new standard size bearings in, torque up and check it rotates freely by hand?

Already got a set of feeler gauges (of course!) so that's easy done! :D

If you want to assess the crank journals you'd do best with a dial gauge to measure the thickness of the crank in several places as they don't always wear perfectly round. You should get a fair idea just by looking though.

you need the PL-A size,

assuming the crank journels are all round(they should be cecked with a micrometer) and the crank is straight(checked with a dti) the clearance should be checked with the plastigauge, and you should have 1-2 thou clearance on the main bearings and slightly less on the big ends. the rule of thumb being min clearance .5thou per inch diameter, max clearance 1 thou per inch diameter.

Many thanks for your reply, thats exactly what i was after! :wub:

I assume the big end bearings are measured in the same way, but after the crank is installed (as per the Haynes instuctions)?
