Hi There,

I've not got a Mini, i've acutally got a Suzuki SJ410 but i've got a HS4 off a mini on and wanted some advice as to how to clean and service it.

I've got an expanded diagram of all parts and taken the carb off the car. So far i've taken the dashpot and piston off, cleaning all inside with meths, but what else can i do? Never been inside a carb before but it looks pretty simple. Should i take the float chamber apart and clean that?

At the moment the car is very hard to start in the morning but fine once it's been running 5 minutes.

I'm going to take the needle out and check with Burlen that i'm using the correct one.

The other thing is there was hardly any oil in it, do i fill it up through the cap at the top? and to what level? i'm going to use 3 in 1 oil.

Anything else i can do? Copper grease on all the springs? New gasket paper? Also, once i've cleaned everything should i coat all the surfaces in a layer of oil?

Once i've cleaned it all and put it back together i was thinknig about taking it to a mini specialist and getting it set up on a rolling road.

Thanks

Adam

Burlen (who now own SU) sell a rebuild kit for the HS4. It isnt cheap, (£35+) but it includes all new rubber seals, jets etc I think. Well worth it if you want to keep the carbfor a while.
Oh, and put it on a mini

the SU is a good mod for an SJ410, I know someone who has one on an off-road prepped SJ, its so much better than the finickity Japanese carb fitted to them as standard.

Matt's bang on with the rebuild kit, its probably the best route to go for it really.

Yeah it had the SU on when i bought it, so much better than the stock one. Another big benefit is it can run at any angle, so no cutting out on huge hill climbs.

I've seen the re-build kit at burlen but was just trying to save a few pennys, thought if i cleaned it all and just replaced a few bits like the throttle shaft, needle, jet and float i might get away with it.

Suppose it's best not to try and cut corners tho.

Anyone had any experience using a Grose Jet (superior replacement for needle & seat)?

Thanks
