I've decided to take my car off the road for a few months until summer. Reason being its broke atm and i've not got the enthusiasm/time/patience to fix it at the moment and because i'm at uni, won't be using it much at all.

So since the tax and insurance is due soon - I can't see the point in forking out £800 when i won't be using it properly over the next few months. My new engine should be ready to go in once i've finish uni for summer and once thats in, i'll insure it again and get it back on the road.

I asked footman james - My current insurance company - about storage insurance and they said its only £39 a year - But on the condition of it being in a secure garage - Which i don't have. I feel bad asking my nan to put it in her garage as she'll have to struggle past it whenever she needs to get in there.

I'm happy putting it up on axel stands, draining the fuel, removing the battery and leaving it under the cover on the drive for a few months but would really like some fire and theft insurance for it while its there...

Does any body know any companies that'll do storage insurance without a garage? Or maybe some sort of restoration insurance that'd cover all the parts and things?

From past experience, most will require that it's in a lockup of some description ( so garage, unit, workshop, maybe a locked compound ) but worth asking.

As far as I know laid up insurance always requires the car to be garaged. I phoned round quite a few companies a while ago. As it goes I do have a garage - decided not to insure it at all in the end

Yes you'll stuggle to find laid up cover for a car that is not kept in a garage.

That could end up costing me more than the insurance couldn't it.

Also the idea is to have the car there to work on - I still want to have easy access to the car.

You could always downgrade your insurance for now. Assuming you're fully comp, you could change to TPFT You could also put a limited mileage on the policy, say 1000 miles per year. That way it should cost you less than £800, but the car would still be covered if anything happend to it on your drive.

I wanted to stick my Impreza into storage whilst I was in Cyprus for 3 years. They wanted £2k a year just to store it in a warehouse. I had to sell the car, that was stupidly expensive.
