hey all i no this is probly a stupid question to sum, but what does the oil do in the dashpot and what is the best oil to put in it. at the moment iam putting in the oil that i use for the engine is this ok :grin: cheers

The oil damps the movement of the throttle essentially, like a shock absorber on the suspension. Standard is engine oil, but thinner oil gives a crisper response.

My mechanic suggested 3-in-1 oil... also, break fluid is something else I have heard... hope this helps!

What happens if it finds its way into the engine?

Wouldnt use brake fluid! It will knacker the rubber seals in the carb. Its insanley corrosive.

Nothing wrong with putting brake fluid in a carb. If you over fill it then it just gets burnt by the engine- no probs.

3 in 1 is fine but it won't last long.

brake fluid doesn't damage rubber. It would damage master cylinder, wheel cylinder and caliper seals too if it did.

But I think brake fluid is too thin too be used in a dashpot. The best stuff to buy is the genuine SU damper oil - about £6 from minispares. Its the right consistency, and a bottle lasts me about a year.
