No reason you can't use a spanner to undo the nut although it could be very tight. However when re-attaching you would need a socket and suitable sized torque wrench.

The size is either 1 5/16" (inch & five sixteenths) or if quite a new car (MPi) or replacement nuts have been used previously they could be 34mm.

Good luck!!!
That nut should be torqued up to about 150 ft/lbs.

I wouldn't rely on a spanner to undo it. I would get and impact socket (the black ones) and a good quality breaker bar.

I needed a 1 5/16 socket for my steering wheel nut. One shop said he hasn't sold imperial sockets for ages and then only went up to 27mm!
In the end, I used two large adjustable spanners and then measured the nut with a vernier guage. It came out to just under 34mm. So I got one from Halfords. Bit steep at around £10 but it is a lot easier than spanners as I can use my torque wrench to get the right torque instead of guessing it.

i dont what the imperial equivalent for the castle nut is,, but i bought an impact wrench socket 33mm from halfords. that fits snuggly. to be fair it would be a pain in the arse to undo the nut with a spanner, iv had a breaker bar on them before now with someone in the car with the car in gear and their foot on the brakes and it was still a struggle,, to reitterate,, pretty darn tight indeed!!
