I had a Mk1 for a few years, mainly because it doesn't weigh as much as the Mk2, so handles much better and is a little faster. :P No real problems with mine, it was an everyday workhorse, so I didn't really take too much care of it. Spent £40 to have the alternator bushes redone, and I think about £120 for a new rear caliper, but apart from that it never failed an MOT, or cost me me anything to maintain. Rust was a bit of a problem, especially round the rear valance and arches. I know it needed new bushes all round, but never bothered doing it, so mine did pitch a bit under braking, and wasn't exactly flat through the corners.

Get a well looked after one though, and you'll be well pleased. Plus, it looks like prices have started to rise a little since I owned mine.

I also had one of these, 1989 model, bought 8 years ago with 23,000 gen miles, one of the best cars I have owned. Still see it around my area too
Was a whgite T-bar model, the only minor whinge with it was that the occasional leak from the roof, other than that, great!

Repeater indicators are not built into the front of the front wings so it's not an import, so not a turbo as standard.

dont inderstand how people can say mk2 was slower? Mine ran 180bhp out of 2.0 n/a. fair enough might be heavier, but the mk1 is a 1.6, older, so probably not running at full bhp. I know mine went well!!
Also got smoother lines and more shape.

They did with the MR2 what BMW did with the Mini, only not quite so extreme.
