Terrible idea. You can cope with a little petrol diluted in the diesel but not very much. Do you know what petrol would do at 20:1 compression? You were very lucky not to have to buy a new engine.

when i was in finland, we put 5-10L of unleaded in every tank full of diesel to prevent the tank from freezing. That was a MINI Mk1 with a Toyota engine, i had nothing to do with the Mk2 so couldn't really give any advice than what you have done, always best to play it safe!!!! you can actually buy a retro fit insert which prevents you putting an unleaded nozzle inside the filler neck.

My dad once filled his company Mondeo with 50% petrol and then noticed his mistake. Instead of facing embarresment he just picked up the correct pump and filled the rest of the tank with diesel, then drove off!
I couldn't beleive it when he told me because I remember 5th Gear doing a demonstartion as to what happens when u fill a car with the wrong fuel and the diesel car conked out after a few miles.
Dad made the same mistake another occasion (but with not quite so much petrol) and the car was still going fine when it was time to change it after 3 years and just over 90k miles!
I definately wouldn't recommend anyone to do the same, but it just shows that i'm sure a little residual petrol in the system would cause little or no problem.
