If you've got the room, remove the sparkplugs, put it in gear and roll the car backwards and forewards, this will turn the engine over, I just watch the valves till I see one going down and keep watching that one till it stops, then adjust the corresponding valve.. based on the rule of 9

I'm presuming you know the rule of 9 if you have already tried

No 1 down adjust No 8
No 2 down adjust No 7
No 3 down adjust No 6

notice they add up to 9 ;D

If you haven't got the room, jack up a wheel and turn the wheel, so it turns the engine

Like I said its easy to watch the ones that are opening, just wait till the rocker stops going down, when it looks like its stopped moving adjust the corrisponding valve by rule of 9

Did mine yesterday, jack a front wheel up and put the car in 4th, get someone to turn the wheel for you and watch the valve you'll see it start to open (spring gets compressed) then it will start to rise again turn the wheel back the other way till the valve hits the turning point, then check the gap on the other valve.

i take it once this has been done (correctly), there should be little if not any "tappety" noises coming from the engine

When using the 'rule of 9', when the valve is full open, the opposite number will be 180 degrees away from it's full lift, so unless you are using an extremely long duration cam 300+ degrees, then the rocker being checked will be off the cam lobe for an number of degrees either side, so as long as the open valve is approximately at the bottom of it's travel it'll be fine, it does not need to be 'exactly' at the bottom of it's travel.

FYI, when gapping roller rockers, slide the feeler gauge side to side not forwards and backwards, and if using std sintered rockers, it's usually worth a check to see if there is any wear on the rocker, indents will give false gap clearances.

Depends what you are expecting... they will always 'tap' a little... this will be worse with (a) wrongly adjusted tappets and (b) work rocker assembly.

I found a handy little tool whilst walking around my local Halfords, The Gunson Clik Adjust Micrometer Tappet Adjuster, it works regardless of the worn out rockers and stems, each click if i remember rightly is equivalent to 0.004 thou. Its a bit fiddly to start off with but once you've done the first valve its easy.

I know this doesnt help your open and closed valve situation, but it makes set up easy and keeps them tappets all the less tappetty.
