hi , i purchased my car about a year ago , and was told it had a respray two years ago from when i bought it, which it has . But not a very good one . The problem is the roof paint is starting to crack so i am going to spray it again. my fathers friend will be spraying it for me as he is pretty good with spraying things. my question is what will i need to buy , the roof its self is currently white but am wanting to do it gloss black. things i think i need to buy is .

the black paint , primer , lacer and sand paper.

once i have these things shall i sand the roof down to the bear metal and then apply primer. then paint , and then lacer . is that correct? can the primer be applyed by rattle cans ?

could somebody please give me a paint code for a nice gloss black which people tend to use for mini roofs.

thanks

Etch primer though because you'll be applying it to bare metal.

Depends whats on the roof.

If its cracking theres something funky going off.

When theres bad reactions going on like you describe I'd strip the roof back to bare metal.

Use a wire wheel attachment to get in the gutters and a DA sander with 80 grit disks.

Once its all bare metal go over with 120-320 on the DA to remove any harsh scratching caused by the 80.

This is the time to repair and fill any dints.

Once your filled and happy you'll need a light dusting of etch primer.

Rattle can primer isnt great as it like to react with things alot. Get hold of some proper 2k primer you can put on with a gun. It will need hardener and a little thinner.

Then go straight on with the primer. Steady coat first then 3-4 good coats.

Let it tack off between coats but dont let it go hard.

Once your primed its wise to spray a light guide coat. I use a tin of old dark basecoat, empty any remaining primer out the gun, put a splash in and use that as guide. The other simple way is an aerosol of black.

Leave it a few days to go off properly then you can begin to prep for paint.

If your using 2k basecoat and laquer flat with 800-1200 wet, dry off and grey scotch especially round the gutters.

If your waterbase basecoat and laquer, much the same but 800 might show up in some colours so steer towards 1000-1200 paper wet.

If your solid colouring, flat with 320-500, red scotch all over.

Mask up well and spirit wipe your roof, masking, airline, gun etc.

When your sprit has evaporated off (couple minutes) you need to tack rag the roof to remove any traces of dust or remaining muck.

If your painting in 2k make sure you've got a good mask and ventilation.

As for a gloss black paintcode, your best bet is to look up a local auto paint supplier and go talk to them. If you ask them they will mix you up a solid black in their mixing colours which should be as black as black will be.

Personally I'd go basecoat and laquer way as I find polishing laquer after flatting alot easier than trying to polish solid black.
