That is most impressive. I love the colour. If I could get anything vaguely near that I'd be delighted. I was thinking of rollering mine using Rustoleum paint. You've now convinced me. But, the Dulux paint - is it a metal paint or just household gloss paint? Thanks for sharing.

Hugh

Well I originally started to pain the mini using 750ml tins of dulux non-drip gloss for about £12 to £14 per tin, although it used to be £7 a tin in Wilkinson’s. I say originally as it was only ever meant to paint the inside and floors with it, but it was cheap and the finish wasn’t too bad.

The only problem I had was the colour I’d chosen has not long been discontinued, but being dulux I was able to get a 1L tin mixed up using the pain code for £12. Witch somehow works out cheaper to have a 1L mixed than it does to buy a standard off the shelf 750ml tin for £14 lol.

I know they say with most metal paints you don’t need a primer, but as I’ve found out you do. As without a primer the paint won’t stick and could be scraped back off like a skin once dry.

But even then I’ve only used cheap red oxide primer either by brush or cheap simonise cans off ebay and then sanded/flatted off with 800 wet and dry. As for paint to thinners ratio, I’ve just sort of been making it up as I go along. But it’s only ever been just enough thinners to lose the roller marks as it dries.

Thank you for your advice. This is a great topic. I hadn't come across it before. Is there any chance you can get your early photos of your welding repairs sorted out. They would be most interesting. Sorry to hassle.

That link should have all the picks from the start, plus all the other times I’ve changed my mind and re-done stuff.

Plus there should be a few other sets on there of the other minis, the daily 25 and a few others I’ve had some form of involvement with.

I colour sanded the roof and n/s with 1200 wet and dry then polished it back up with the mop and some g3. Haven’t properly polished it yet as I couldn’t be arsed to run out and buy some. I did also do the rear panel and boot lid, but I’ve spotted a few tiny areas were the primer is just showing through. So need to put another coat on the boot lid, witch isn’t too much of a hassle to mask up while I paint the front.

It's been sat in my garage semi finished ever since slowly being worked on and bits 'borrowed' to keep my other mini on the road.

And these are the most recent, although from 2012 pic of its current ish state.

Currently the engine runs although it hasn't been driven. The brakes work, just not that well and I'm thinking the replacement master cylinder I bought is duff. I've got to buy and re-fiberglass on a pair of front arches as with the metro brakes the weeks just touched and then repaint the whole front end. the boot lids been rubbed down and is yet to be repainted and I've got a custom dash rail still using the same dash I've started.

Just financially I barely have enough to keep one mini on the road, let alone any left over to spend and finish this one.

Looks great. Shame it's just sitting there. You're doing a great job on your 25 though!

I've done a small bit of progress on the Mayfair.

I picked up a working clutch master cylinder for a fiver at Stanford hall, as I'd 'borrowed' the previously fitted to fix the 25's witch had decided to leak fluid down the back of the pedal. I also bout a pair of nearly new door seals for £2, witch have replaced the rather tatty 89 originals.

I've repainted the wheels black, as even though it hasn't seen the road the white just started looking dirty.

I've since made up a custom top dash rail to give me a tiny bit more room behind the dash, made up from nothing more than a few scraps (was the backing to an old book case) of hard board, some foam pipe lagging and some left over fleece fabric.

And I've drilled and fitted one of the door pockets I'd bought years ago for £12 a pair, painted, but never got round to fitting.

And as it looks now as of 3 weeks ago. Up for sale for £500 with no takers. 10 years of work undone, never got it back on the road and all the parts taken off sold on. The only part I'm keep is the engine and gearbox. As i doubt anyone would be willing to pay me £700 (witch is what it cost me in parts)  for a fully rebuilt 998 engine and box with 1275mg head and cam that's run, but done zero miles.
