Title says it all. Anyone has a good idea on how i can fish the remaining key out of the key-hole? Or do I have to pry the entire fuel cap off?

Also, been looking at fuel caps at minispares, plminishop etc, prices range from 15 to a whopping 50+. Anyone knows if this would fit a 1992 Rover Spi fuel cap?

https://www.plminish...duct-A-CAP.html

Any other recommendations would help.

Thanks guys!

well i wass going to suggest drilling it out but then u get *poop poop* in your tank, or empty your tank through the fuel pipe under the car and drill it out, take your tank out and put a tiny drop of petrol in it to swizz all the shaving round and tip it out the top. But thats a very long process.

Would a locksmith be able to get it out? May be worth a phone call

i think you will have to forcefully remove the cap, unless you can get a magnet to retract the broken bit?

forceful removal = huge pair of pliers / stilsons

wack a screwdriver in the key slot and turn it like the key. The broken bit should still function to unlock the mechanism. It's worked for me a couple of times

Can you not get some plyers on the broken bit of key in the lock?

Hi guys

i can actually still turn the fuel cap with the short stub on whats left of the key. I have spare keys, so just wondering if i can still salvage the cap or buy a new one.

If you have a spare key and you can get the broken key out without damaging the cap itself, i don't see a problem why you couldn't use it again as long as it still functions properly.

I bought one from here http://www.minispare...d...&prod_id=98

By the way the link in your first post is for a cover that goes over your original petrol cap. You still need a standard petrol cap either way.

You could try welding a piece of metal carefully onto the broken key then pull it out.

Thanks for the tip guys, will definitely have a go at fishing it out.

James962, there're 4 other petrol caps on that site you posted. Would any of the other non-locking caps work, or are those just covers that go on top of the original cap as well. http://www.minispare...p;sub_cat_id=33

Is there anywhere that sells a non-locking filler cap in its entirety. I'd like to avoid the issue of broken keys again especially since there aren't any petrol theives where I come from. =)

Well there's this black non-vented cap here: -

But I'd still prefer a lockable cap myself and so long as you keep it lubricated with some 3in1 or graphite powder, then that key shouldn't snap again: -
