Someone at work mentioned about using two nuts against each other to remove them? I need to get the old studs out from the head, Had a try but I give up I can't work out how its done! ;)

Run the two nuts onto the thread until the stud is sticking out of the second nut; tighten the two nuts against each other (two spanners in opposite directions) until they are locked, then, using the first nut, you should be able to unscrew the stud.

Are you then just using one spanner on the first whilst still holding other spanner on the second?

You are wedging the 2 nuts together, hopefully the friction on the threads in the top nut will be higher than that on the threads in the block, so they will unscrew instead. Make sure the threads are free of oil and add a 3rd nut if needs be, stop turning the bottom nut if it is pushing the upper nut(s) instead of removing the stud from the block - you'll strip the thread.

They will screw in much easier, you can use the same trick in reverse. Follow the instructions in you manual etc regarding torque and lubing the thread.

The thing is that FAQ means FREQUENTLY asked questions....

There's too much stuff in there as it is and next year I'm going to get onto pruning it a bit.

Just one thing and it might make no difference, but when tightening studs in I use the outside nut, not the inner one like you are doing.

And use the inner one to undo the stud.

Yes that's the right way to do it. If you use the outside nut to unscrew the old stud then there is nothing to stop the nut unscrewing from the stud, if it's a stubborn stud. If you undo using the inside nut, then the outside nut will stop the inner one turning on the stud.
