The figures are interesting Mab. The New Fiat looks much smaller yet it's proportionally bigger than a Bini when related to the originals. I suppose we actually compare them to the majority of cars around them. I doubt a Bini is any smaller than a Ka or Clio whereas the new Fiat is smaller than most.

Fiat 500 likes closer...mainly because its the closest to the size.

The New Fiat 500 and the New MINI are both 576mm longer than the original classic versions (both were designed by Frank Stephenson)

Classic Fiat 500 - 2970mm Length - 1320 Width - 1320 Height
New Fiat 500 - 3546mm Length - 1650 Width - 1490 Height

Classic Mini - 3050mm Length - 1400 Width - 1350 Height
New MINI - 3626mm Length - 1689 Width - 1408 Height

But the Fiat looks better proportioned than the latest BINI.

Do you really think that or are you just saying it because you don't like the New MINI?

Well at a glance, I often mistake the new MINI for a mini, especially in traffic I see one and think yay! then it comes closer and it's a BINI. There is a definite resemblance, they could hardly make it to look exactly the same could they. I think the design is a good and respectful version of the old design. An evolution, if you like.

I doubt very much that Issigonis would see it that way though and neither do many a classic Mini fan.

To be honest I've seen lots of cars in the distance and wondered if their classic Minis and few of them have been BINIS.

what are you on about??? issigoniss would have surely been proud to see his creation evolve?
remember the new designer was some sort of long relative to him!!
if there is a 'mini fan' out there that thinks it doesn't look like a mini then i'm sorry there being down right stubburn, also possibly in a time warp from when britain was on top of the world!!

the only reason the mini kept the one shape is because the british never have, and as they no longer make there own cars never will, upgrade models to keep with the time.

if you just kept the mk1 golf in production then after 40 years changed it to what it is, then there would have been uproar about that too. but no, they steadyly changed it's shape over the years so you can trace the shape change and look.

if you knew anything about issigonis, you would know that hew would NOT be proud of the MINI. he was all about greatest internal space for minimal external space, this is some thing the MINI really fails on, and he despised anything to do with Germany.

no, I'm sorry, that's one thing your wrong on

I dont think he would like many modern cars.
Wasnt he a big advocate of cars not having luxuries like radios and heaters.
I think I remember reading an interview years ago and he treated driving like a task and therefore it shouldnt be comfortable.
He probably wouldnt have approved of the later (particularly export) minis with cd players, aircon, and imo the comfiest seats for the mini.

Thanks Anorak, you took the words out of my mouth and it's a pity that more people knew all the facts before talking out their rear ends.

Anyway I doubt Issigonis would approve of all the extra safety features in modern cars either, because they give the average motorist a false sense of security and therefore are more likely to drive badly.

So I'd say he's right there considering the driving standards the way they are now.

you don't need to be related to him to know what he was like, the official issigonis biography is the book i always go back to when I've nothing better to read, i must have read it about six times now, and I've also read the other one (the man who made the mini-which is not as good).

as was just said, issigonis didnt like the safety features, he didnt even wear a seat belt, and his design was all about function. just look at the original mini dash board and compare it to the MINI one. the MINI dash is so over styled that issigonis would have hated it.

im sorry, but anyone who thinks issigonis would like the MINI knows very little about the man, that's not some sort of petty reason for an argument, that's fact.

issigonis hated the beetle as well

He hated all comforts, as he believed they distracted drivers, and there was no heater because the cold kept the driver alert. The man loved the simplicity and space saving design of the mini, so would he like an over styled, full of comforts and gadgets German car that was bigger than the mini and has less room inside than the mini...you can safely make the assumption that he would'nt.

Haha this is getting ridiculous. So Anorak, you're trying top say that the new mini should be exactly the same as issigonis's ideal, which I imagine would be the mk1 mini, maybe even more simple if that was possible? Well somehow I don't think that would work with a modern day car. We might as well be pushing each other about in wheelbarrows.

He didnt say it should be, he stated that Alec Would not of been happy with the new mini. Opposing what Jake said, he didnt say what it should or Should not be..advising someone on their misinformed statement
