I always get told the escence of the mini is its size. being mini. Have you parked your mini next to a BMW Mini. The difference is emmence.

Then I parked today next to the New Fiat 500 and find that with everyone saying a small car wouldn't be able to meet todays standards and quoting the Smart Car does.... what about the Fiat 500.

They seem to be rebuilding their followers again. And they have kept the car small.

Surely a New " MINI " should have maintained its small size as one of the main factors in its rebuild rather than just trying to get the "look" right

Unfortunately BMW wanted it's own mid sized car like the VW Golf and again unfortunately they chose to call it a Mini instead of a Metro, Allegro or Maxi!

:D

they went for the brand that would sell, are you all arrogant people on here???

Calm down, I think you'll find it was light hearted and not actually suggesting that we should be driving BMW ALLEGROs. We're not "arrogant", we're just classic Mini enthusiasts and the majority of us have little interest in the new MINI.

I guess we'll have to agree to differ on this one (as ever) and as it's Xmas hopefully live in peace man!

:D

My thoughts exactly Taffy, several times we have both agreed to differ after an interesting/lively Mini/MINI discussion, hopefully with both sides gaining some positive insight and a mutual respect for each others point of view. One thing we both agree on and have common interest in is the classic Mini, so if we ever met at a show I'm sure we would get along just fine! I know some say these discussions are just boring but why bother reading or joining in a discussion if thats the case, there are plenty of other posts to read.

Like Anorak with his knowledge of the Rover Minis, I also get annoyed by the many posts that come up repeating the same old mis-information about the new MINI, and like Nurseholliday, sir Jake and a few others feel compelled to correct it or post the real facts as far as anyone can know them. I don't start new posts on the new MINI on TMF anymore (see MINI2.com, MiniTorque.com, MCR) but will reply to others who start them if I feel I can add any useful facts or correct information.

At least few of these MINI/Mini threads have to be closed now as most know more about the new MINI and realise that, like it or not, it is here to stay and in no way threatens the original Mini's Iconic position in motoring history.............quite the opposite in fact, in some countries like the USA where the launch of the MINI has boasted sales and interest in the classic Mini to new heights.

Hopefully, as the new MINI is becoming much cheaper secondhand to own as a standard or modified fun daily driver, more members on TMF will begin to accept that having an interest in or owning a classic Mini does not mean you have to hate/dislike/hurl abuse at anyone who also owns or likes the new MINI or occasionally posts a few positive facts that some either don't know or choose to ignore?

We are all Mini enthusiasts at the end of the day.

Happy Christmas to all on TMF! :D

its not the subject that's boring, its the arguing

Why don't you exhume Alec Issigonis and perform some necro on him, meanwhile, myself, Jake, and Mab will be having a good ol' time :xmas:

if he managed that i would be impressed... the guy was cremated :xmas:

So that means he's not currently spinning in his grave after all then?

:xmas:

Either way Merry Christmas everyone.

PLUS!!! i do believe that i am, as a member, in my rights to give answers based on my opinion on an open thread?????
and read through i have used facts to back up my rants!!!!

yes this is true, you are within your rights, but as stated just now, this is turning into the same topic we had last week, it seems any topic that even touches on rover, cooper or BMW ends up in a mini Vs MINI slanging match, that's why its becoming boring.

NO MATE YOUR NOT LISTENING!!!
i'm not 'slagging' either, there both great cars, the proper mini is by far more fun to drive and puts a bigger smile on my face, but bmw have created a new version as good as, if not a damn sight better than any shoddy chinese car manufacturer could have achieved, as for rover come on, if it wasnt for bmw the name would have stopped all together. if you think this is a good thing the to be honest your not mini fans, just sad old men sat in your potting shed unable to move on from a time when britain was great and this fine land managed to be world beaters dispite the size (abit like the mini really) AND come to think of it, like the mini everything in our industry is now run by germans chinese indian ameriacan companys.........

maybe on that side of things it just shows how british the new mini truely is!!!!!!!

.........shutdown!

merry christmas, from a driver who live with both new and old so know what he's on about instead of resorting to petty slaggings of either car!!

Jesus *melonsing* Christ, you really dont read things well do you !!!! who the hell said "slagging" i said slanging match, which is a very different thing and refers to all topics on the subject.

the arguing is getting boring, not the subject (mini or MINI). im asking people to stop arguing about them not talking about them.

you really should try reading things better BEFORE I START SHOUTING >:xmas:

but in this instance i used the term slanging match in relation to the constant backward and forward arguments that spring up in every mini vs MINI topic, not necessarily your comments.

as pointed out, i really do understand some peoples need to correct "incorrect information", I'm the worst one at doing that. its just a shame that all these topics turn out the same way and sometimes i wish people would just leave it (myself included).

i think we all know that the very last of the classic minis were actually under the ownership of BMW, but we just dont like to admit it :shifty: and yes its true, rover did start the designs for the MINI before BMW were involved. is it a British car? probably yes, are some people ever going to accept it as a mini? BIG NO ON THAT ONE

As far as I'm concerned, it's a good thing that a well off and stylish company bought the brand, and have built a very impressive modern car, that rover never would have. I also think it's interesting how you can look at pictures of streets from the 60's and see minis everywhere, same as you can now, and see MINIs. It has had a similiar affect to the original, and I think that's pretty difficult to achieve with the amount of crap euro boxes around at the moment. The MINI is a fun, stylish and unique car, hmm does that remind you of anything..

I love the old mini, but similarly, whenever I drive a MINI it puts a smile on my face, and that's what it's all about.

How is the BINI unique? It's just another hatchback mule like all the others.

The real Mini changed motoring forever, plus had an amazing motorsport history to boot.
