It may be my interpretation of the 2 documents but to me it looks like the Haynes Manual (photograph) contracdicts the Rover Workshop Manual (sketch).
Can someone confirm the correct configuration????????????

if you look close enough at the triangular strenghtening ribs around the fixing holes on the coil you will see the plug numbers there

Yeh, great isn't it, and that's from the Pukka Rover (RAVE) Workshop Manual CD !!!!!!!!!!!!

Just because its in the Pukka manual doesnt mean its right, just like if you buy something you have to assemble, that the picture on the front of the box is of the item correctly assembled

Pardon the stupid question, but becuase of the wasted spark would it be possible to swap 2 and 4 or 1 and 3? Would the timing be off?

No because the cylinders are paired 1/4 and 2/3. swaping 1 and 2 or 3 and 4 will cause a missfire and the od backfire will do nothing to change timing, just the firing order
