Year: 1989


This morning i got my rev counter through the door


Can it be used in my mini?


Now this is the bit that i need your help on, there are 5 wires on the back 2 reds, 2 blacks and a green


Now then, it came with these instructions (there are more but they are just telling you to dis connect the battery before installing it)
The first one i understand i will just put the picture up so you know the wire colours


Now this is the one i dont understand



So can anyone help? There must be a clever person out there that can help me

It's all there on the picture for you....

A goes to the negative side of your coil.
B goes to an earth
C goes to a switched live on your fusebox

The other red is an illumination circuit. the red goes to a live and the black to an earth... wire it to your dash illumination circuit.

Some rev counters will not work with points and need electronic ignition to function correctly... did you check this?

Black one attaches to part of the body work.

Green one attaches to the negative side of the coil (I think that's a black/white wire with a bullet connector hidden behind the dash)

"C" Red looks like it's for the rev counter so it would attach to the green spade connector behind the dash.

The top red looks like it's for the light so it would go to the side lights' positive.

errr i emailed the ebay seller and he said it would be fine in my car

do i have to get some more cable then so i can get the wires to were they need to be?
How can i tell what the switched live is on the fuse box?

One of the red wires is chunkyer would you say this is for the light?

You may need to make the wires longer, like somebody as mentioned you should find the cables you need to attach to are already on your wiring loom behind the clocks.

Switch live should be the fuse on the fusebox with a green wire in one side, white wire on the other.

Easiest way to find out which red does what is to connect them in turn to a 12v live, connect the blacks to earth

Which ever red makes the illumination come on obviously needs wiring into your lighting circuit.
The other red goes to the fuse box.

By finding a fuse box connection that only becomes live once the keys are in the ignition and turned. Or reading a Haynes manual that tells you, or doing a search on TMF for fusebox information. Taffy reguarly posts up the fusebox details etc...

On a negative earth car, the negative side of the coil is the one with the wire going off to the distributor. Depending on the age of the car and the make/model of its coil, you may even find " - " molded into the coil near the negative terminal.

Bump, also how am i going to connect the wire to the coil on mine all i could see was one spade connector on the negative side and that is being used?

Use your judgement for the earth connection. Either splice into an existing (solid) black wire or use some form of screw connection to attach the wire to a metallic earth connection to the car's chassis.

For the coil, visit your local auto parts or electronics parts store. You'll want some form of "Y" or "piggyback" spade connector. There are different types. Basically you want something that has one female entrance that splits into two male outputs. See these picture links:
