Hi mini1000,

The Underneath wasn't painted as part of the respray so didn't get much attention. Once I had the car on it's wheels I got underneath and painted it with underseal and waxoyl. It'll be getting a second coat before it goes on the road, as I've noticed I've painted it a bit thin in places!

Cheers.

Just been to halfords and bought some bits of clips and brackets etc, so should be making more progress soon.

mini1000 yes the underseal is black. It'll be staying that way.

The project has taken longer than I wanted it to, money has been the limiting factor, and there were a few months late last year where I just lost enthusiasm for it. Thanks for the comment!

OK, so it was absolutely freezing out today, but I was determined to get out and do some work. It was another one of those days where you spend all day out, and don't progress much. Sorry no pictures as there isn't much that looks any different!

Went to fit the hosing for the washers, but d'oh! I'd bought the wrong hosing so I had to go back to halfords to exchange it which swallowed lots of time. Once I got back home it was nice and straightforward fitting all the hosing, and I had some hose left over for the for the fuel tank vent pipe.

Spent an age trying to finally get the bottom bolt of the radiator tightened, and finally did it after much swearing! In the process I dropped one of the spacers for the top bolts somewhere, never to be seen again, so that's an add on to the minispares list. Fitted a throttle cable, the old one didn't work on the HIF44 carb, so had to get a new outer cable. Just need to suss out how the choke cable is secured on.

The fanbelt I tried fitting is too short! I was told to use some string to measure a fanbelt, but my measurement came out shorter than the short fanbelt! So it's back to the drawing board on this. Once I've found a fanbelt that fits, and got this on, I can resecure the radiator top bolts, fit the top hose, and fill the water system.

Started fitting my coil. Went a bit overboard on the tightening of the terminals and snapped one off! Not happy, so now need a new coil..... again!

Interior wise this is looking even better now. I've fitted the final door card. Gave up trying to use the little clip things, so I used some velcro instead. Glad I did, as the result is the same, and it was a lot easier. Fitted all my door furniture, and now the doors look great. Bought some screws from halfords to secure the gear lever gaiter down, and fettled with the carpet to make it lie nicer. Eventually I think it's out with my velcro left overs to secure the carpet properly.

Lastly, I've had a change of heart on my speakers. I was gonna fit some 6" components in pods onthe flitch panels, but held them up to it today and they and huge and swallow the space around the feet. I've had a look online and I reckon a good quality set of 10cm 2 way speakers in pods will be better, and I may add a 6"sub in a box under the rear seat with an ampifier later. This way I should still get decent quality sounds, without swamping the interior with speakers. For the pods I'm thinking either matching carpet, or brown matching vinyl. Then an ipod interface in the dash to finish it off.

Cheers,

John

Right well, another update. I've been pretty busy as I've had some time off.

The car is pretty much finished!

I went to minispares and got a load of bits in a final push to finish it off. Got a new fanbelt which fitted straightaway, so secured all the radiator and alternator up. Bought myself a spare so I know which one I need to be buying now!

Bought a coil take 2. Fitted this one in the bracket and fitted that no probs.

Interior wise - Bought some new seat belts, bolted these in, and fitted a new mark one gearknob. Nice and subtle. The only interior jobs to do are to secure the plastic trims on the door lock latches, and fit some speakers. Also waiting on some grommets to put in the floor, then I can velcro the carpet down. The rest is done.

Attention also turned to the electric fuel pump. Well I decided that I wasn't keen on having it on the rear subframe, as it (and more importantly the electric bits) would get wet and covered in poo. So I decided to fit it in the boot. This was a dead fiddly job with the boot lid on but I got there in the end. I've fitted long enough fuel pipe that when it comes to changing the filter, I can unbolt the pump from the mounts, pull it out, then change the filter. I then fed the wiring down to the bulkhead down through the car, fitted an inertia switch, relay, fuse and connected it all up. Its a bit snug with the spare in but I think its better than being exposed to the elements.

Whilst at minispares I also bought myself a grill. I was going to put a van style grill on it, but a flick through some magazines made me change my mind. I settled for a standard 11 slat grill. I've made a bit of a mess fitting it :) I tried to fit buttons, but made a mess of the front panel trying to get the holes to line up. I then thought I'd be better off fitting standard screws, so out came the gaffer tape, taped on the drill to line it up, then drilled small pilot holes for the self tappers. The ripped off the tape - and took half the paint with it! Moral of the story, don't use gaffer tape, masking tape is fine!! So this will need touching up. As I've decided to go for a mark 3 grill, I now need to get the lip fitted to my bonnet to attach the top trim, then it should look complete.

I've also been messing around with the electrics. I connected a nice fresh battery and then like a kid in a sweet shop, ran around testing stuff.

Nothing. Heart sinks.

Got the trusty volmeter out and checked the battery. 12.7 volts. Move to the solenoid. 12.5 volts. All seemed good. Turns out the battery cable was on the wrong terminal of the solenoid so swapped this over. Ran around testing. Indicators, check. interior light, check. Head lights, errr no. Had a few things not working. The hazard light tell tale wasn't working, but it turns out the connection had come off fitting the switch. LIghts were a loose connection in the stalk, a bulb had blown in the rear drivers light, and only one fog was working. Also there was no tell tale in the foglight switch. Took the switch out and could hear the bulb rattling inside, so pulled it apart and refitted this, job done. The connection to the bulb in the non-working fog wasn't touching, so that was sorted. I now have working electrics in everything I can check. Just need to establish later if the fuel gauge, rev counter, and temperature gauge are working. The stereo even works (although I don't have speakers yet!).

A couple of odd jobs then its a phone call and book in to ML motorsport for them to re-curve and install the dizzy, set up and run in the engine, and set up the suspension. Then boring stuff like MOT, tax and you'll never get me out of the thing! I'll get some pictures done soon.

Brilliant!

Trust the electrics to be a fiddly job, fingers crossed for the MOT :)

Looking fantastic! Good to see the enthusiasm has returned! the interior looks great too. Get in touch if you need those bits doing, I may be able to sort something out.

Great Pete thanks. I might wait until it's all legal and drivable then drive it over to you to get them done.

Is it particularly easy to touch and patch things up without it looking errr... patchy? There are a few bits that need doing, I'm probably being picky, but it would be nice for it to be perfect.

I really like the interior as well, but I'm finding imperfections in that too!

The car is by no means perfect, but I love it and can't wait to drive it.

Yeah if you still have that paint I gave you it should be easy to touch in chips etc, even bigger areas can be repaired and made almost invisible, but it can take a bit of time.. I'll have to see it.

It's probably a good job that it's not completely perfect, or you wouldn't want to use it :D

Right well today I took on the task of bleeding the clutch and brakes. My mate Dan came over to lend a hand (or a foot for the pedals, however you see it) and we got on with it.

Firstly, did the clutch. Filled things up and bleed the system until there was only bubble free fluid left. Unfortunately I spilled fluid everywhere as I over estimated how much fluid the clutch would take, but some frantic wiping down of the are saw that clean. At some stage I'll give it a second wash down to stop the brake fluid eating the paint.

Moved onto the brakes. Everything was really simple to be honest! Started with the rear passenger side, then rear driver side, front passenger, then front driver. We were really thorough in making sure there was no bubbles, and Dan was frequently topping up the reservoir to make sure no air would be drawn in. Overall a satisfying job.

The clutch feels lighter than the old one, and the brakes feel nice and solid. Once the engine is up and running we can test the clutch properly.

Jobs Left before I send it to MLM;

Fit bonnet lip
Fit radio antenna and speakers
Fit the engine breathing system once the hoses arrive
Fit number plates
Adjust handbrake cable
Fill tank with fuel.

Quite a small list!

I'm asking MLM to do the following;
Re-curve the dizzy and fit, along with leads.
Adjust timing.
Fill oil and coolant, and start engine for first time.
Tune up engine.
Adjust tracking, camber, castor and ride height. Hopefully this will cure my arches rubbing on the wings, but if not I'll have to find someone to do this as well.
Hopefully they can do the MOT or know someone that does.

Once the car is back from the shop I can check that the fuel gauge, rev counter and temperature gauges work, give the wheels a polish and sort out a spares/tool kit that I'll carry in the boot.
