undo and removethe pinch bolt at the bottom of the column.

using a suitable lever - separate the clamp slightly.. column should then break its grip on the splines.

do i take my column from the rack or the rack from the column? its a tad rusty therefore seized on

column from the rack - am sure its in the haynes if you need a reference..

does the bolt in the clamp at the base of the column tighten to the clamp or is it just the nut on the end

mine seems to be very seized

Tightens to the nut on the end - though it is a snug fit in the groove in the spline that comes out of the rack...

Hello, Good thread to start. Im going to be doing this shortly, Why do the ball joints have to split? Can you not take the rack off without doing this?

they dont need to be split... though you need to split the trackrod ends from the steering arms....

dors any one know if i can just support the front of the sub frame and lower the back as iv only got one bottle jack that i can get my hands on, but at the same time i dont want to break anything else as the bill is just getting silly amounts at the mo
. thanks to minidave for them wicked easy readable directions its done now and had to borrow two jack as after looking at job i think this is the only posible way to do it

When installing do the U bolts up loose initially (so rack can still move) Then install the column making sure the splins are right down and home - do up the pinch bolt tight THEN tighten the U bolts - that way you will have the splines in line and won't strip if the rack is not square to the column.
