Centre exit doesn't scrape over bumps..But that also depends how low your mini is in the first place. Are you going for a twin box, or a straight through?
I have just purchased a whole new RC40 system with a manifold manifold. I went for the side exit, 2.25 inch rolled tip (millenium edition) And I am very pleased with the results. Looks brilliant, And sounds equally as amazing.
In my opinion, I would go for a side exit. I have also heard sie exit gives a better balanced air flow? Someone may need to confirm that.
Hope this helps.
Ian
Yes I've heard you get a better air flow with a side exit.

Side Exit = Classic
Centre Exit = Boy Racer
Boy racer? Erm... no. Works rally cars had centre exits

haha well said. centre exit isnt boyracer (although i can think of a few more on here that would probably think they were). boyracer is a fart can, something theyve nicked from a big dirty building on the industrial estate and crafted on to their peashooter using quality gaffa tape!Side Exit = Classic

had a twin 2" centre backbox on my last mini and suited it somehow, so i think it really depends on the look of your mini. tho for my next one i think ill go for either a single or twin box single side exit RC40. bit more subtle

Like a standard racer if that makes any sense.
But if I had a bodykit and 13"s etc, I'd probably get twin dtm, but they'd have to stick close to the underneath of the car, centre's always look naff when they're too low down, and again, I can't stand single exit centres, messes the symmetry.
Just my 2p.

I constantly have this debate with myself.... I think it depends entirely on the styling of the car, and the styling of the actual exhaust pipe itself. For instance, on my fairly standard 30 I just got a 1.75" side exit RC40... looks (well, will) look mint, even when I add the slightly wider wheels and arches, and lower it a couple inches.

I agree, I voted for side exit though. Not many cars can pull off center exit.

By fitting a centred exhaust, has anyone had to alter part of the lower body?
No, the subframe rear cross member is lower than the rear valance.
