Whenever I do an oil change I just put some cheap engine oil in first and let the engine tick over until it's up to normal running temperature and then I drain that away before filling up with the good stuff.

Works for me anyway.

Wynns engine flush....

I've used it a number of times on my engine with no ill effects... (both mini and non-mini - petrol and diesel)

Like John, I use a product similar to Wynns periodically (like every other oil change). However, I've been advised against this cleaning IF it isn't done regularly. The argument goes that the deposits are firmly attached to the inside of the engine and that using chemicals to loosen them only serves to circulate debris that can cause damage. Again, I don't see the harm if it's done regularly.

It's an interesting coincidence that you bring this up at this time. During the past week there has been a thread running on the Mini Mania/Mini Spares web site about chemical cleaning. See:

Hi there,

I've been advised my mini has a chemical cleanout but do you know whether to use this stuff if the engine is seriously overheating already?

The head gasket and thermostat have already been changed but it's still overheating, probably due to the fact it's spent most of it's 10yr old life sitting in a garage not being driven!

If it was overheating due to the lubrication system I think you'd know about the cause for reasons other than the heat. If it's boiling water then it must be shifting heat in to the cooling system at a decent rate, so either it's making too much heat (mixture, ignition timing) or it can't dump the heat fast enough (radiator condition, water pump/fan, thermostat)

They were talking about oil above.

You're issue is more likely cooling, I'd check and flush the coolant system.

You could remove the radiator and flush water through it using a hose, and also flush through the coolant system in the same way. Then refit, and fill with fresh coolant mix, (50/50 antifreeze/water mix.

I always use flush.

Interestingly this time I did the oil change I left the sump nut out/filter off for a week as the filter Id bought at Halfords had was wrong.

In that time almost another pint of kack oil came out on my garage floor.

Just goes to show how much stays inside.

Will always do this in future me think.

(PS Gave the engine a chance to prime before firing up!)
