Wrong Carb?

I bought a mayfair with a 1275 metro engine in it but have been told it has the wrong carb on it. I have a spare given to me but am confused about what carb needs to go on the car and how to identify it. The connection on the car has 2 bolts but the spare has a 4 bolt connection the number on the tag on the spare is 5 WK28 9 FZX 1524, the number on the body is JZX 1611, the number on the cap is lzx 1511. i am trying to find out if I need to buy another carb and whether I will need a new inlet manifold because of the number of connection bolts. I can get the engine number if this is any help. I have attached some photos to see if this helps but can only get small ones on the site. thanks in advance

FZX1524 would be a Hif44 but I don't know what the specific application would be.

You could look at the needle and spring to see what they are & if they suit the engine. There were different spec 1.3 engines in Metros - check out the engine number on Guesswork's site if you don't know exactly what yours is.

This is a HS4, 1.5" dia. It's a little tad too smal for a 60+HP engine.

This, FZX 1524, should be an HIF44 which is the correct carb for a 1275cc Metro engine :)
Just to make sure - it should have a 1.75" dia throttle.

Both carbs fit the same intake manifold. With one exeption:
If the manifold has a 1.5" opening, it's not adviceable to fit a 1.75" carb on it,
as it is VERY bad for flow (hence poor MPG and performance).

If your manifold is 1.5" one - I'd just leave the HS4 on the engine,
if it runs fine and you'r happy with it. Should be fine for economic driving.
If your'r after a very little more 'kick' - get a suitable manifold and take the HIF44.
(You propably need an other accelerator cable to suit the HIF's conecction plus the right needle for the engine - 60HP engine should be a BFY, it it is a 100% stock engine)

PS: A 1.5" carb on a 1.75" manifold is well, as there's no reduction in the intake ;)

Thanks for this excellent info. I want to change the carb as I have been told by a garage that they cannot get the engine tuned properly because of the carb being wrong. I am happy with the performance and MPG, as my wife won't race the car anyway. My problem is that I am not happy as we have had to pick up the tick over to compensate for it being a bit erratic (sometimes cutting out) and this has now led to some pre-igniion. To be honest as I have the carb I would like to fit it, so will it reduce my fuel consumption and how do I measure the manifold (the throttle is 1.75 inch). So, as far as I can see I will need a new (preferably used, but what type?) manifold, and a new needle and accelerator cable. Any idea of cost? I am still a little confused about the fittings as the one on the car has two holes and the one off the car has 4 Thanks again this has been a brilliant reply

Then the carb is propably worn out (HS4 tend wo have imense wear on the throttle shaft, resulting in uncontralable behavior, resp. making the engine almost un-tunable).

If you take off the carb, the hole in the manifold should be 1.75" or larger.
Some aftermarket manifolds made for 1.5" carbs can easily be modified, as the hole anlargens soon after the flange were the carb bolts on.
(Hope you understand what I mean, my english isn't that good, especially regarding technical stuff)

Cable for the HIF44's bracket/heatshield (check: CAM4942, allready on your carb) would be part n° SBB10099.

What needle you need will depend on many things:
- what exhaust?
- what airfilter?
- what engine specification?

For the pecification check, as mentioned, your engine number (-> FAQ's section).
With this details, any good & experienced part supplier should be able to tell you what needle suits your engine the best.

But first look what's in the carb. And if you're runing stock components and it is a 60HP Metro engine - BFY is it.

Then tune the carb, idealy with an Co meter, to 3,5-4,5%CO.
Ignition would be about 6-8° on 1500rpm with detached(!) vacuum advance.
