hi all
im new to this forum and the world of classic minis but iv always new id have one and now the time has come.
as per usual im going to jump straight in at the deep end...
im looking to start this project early 2009 and my budget will be in the region of 10k in which i will have to buy a donor mini, engine and all ancillaries.
i was thinking of using a vtec engine but i dont know much about them. am i right in thinking that the B18C is the 190bhp engine from an integra type r? how hard are these engines to come by and what sort of price would i be looking at.
if there is another specific engine you can recommend id be more than happy to consider my options.
iv been doing a bit of research and i found a few companies(listed below) that supply the subframe but im not sure which subframe matches which engine and with what engine do you need to extend the bodywork.

any help at all will be greatly appreciated
regards
Joe

Hi Joe,
Welcome to TMF for a start! With regards to the engine code im not too familiar with the honda's being a vauxhall man
I do know however after considering all options the Honda route always requires a front end extension (unless you get a Minitec subframe from America or go for the less powerful D series) and the engines will set you back a lot. A type r engine from a civic for example will be in the region of £1000.
If you turn to the Vauxhall darkside however your options of engines become greater. Any of the small block Vauxhall engines, so 1.4 & 1.6, will fit under a standard roundnose. Even the 2.0l 8v from the calibra or cavalier sri fits and thats around 130bhp as standard. The large block Vauxhalls, so the 1.8 and 2.0 16v (Redtop) require an extention of around 90mm (Although squeezing it into a standard length has been done and I am in the process as we speak!)
If you need any help gimme a shout or go to www.16vminiclub.com and theres loads of people on there that can help

Hi Joe,
whereabouts in the UK are you?
If you're anywhere near Reading, pop over and I'll take you out in by B16A2 powered mini. It'll give you an idea of the Vtec - although will be a lower power rating than the motor you're looking at.
Oh and mine uses the P&L minis kit.

after doing a bit of research i have noticed that, correct me if im wrong, all minis come with drums on the rear. how much work involved in changing these to discs?

Depends on what you are doing with the car. Mine is standard drums on the back. Assuming you are mounting the engine in the front, you will get very little benefit for the cost of changing to discs at the back.
If it was me I'd stay with the drums and spend the money elsewhere
