spi spec ur valve clearance should be 0.027mm-0.030mm i set mine at 0.28 and this is running great with my metro engine

to be honest id look at the fan belt or the dizzy founds like it either advacing too far and pinking or the fan belts slapping about to me anywho or the engines leaning out at high revs

did u adjust the dizzy with the engine out ??

Re did the timing when changed the head, didn't touch the dizzy when the engine came out but it was doing it before that.

Nothing to do with the fan belt, advancing too much/not enough or leaning off sounds about right.

Nice car! I'm especially a fan of the cage too. >_<
The old gearbox was pretty stuffed.
Hopefully you can get the 1380 soon.

Any more ideas on the noise? It's wierd. I was listening for some subtle change in tone on the video untill I heared it

Im going with valve bounce now, it's weird as I have double valve springs fitted to it. But as soon as it makes that noise it just stops accelerating.

I have recently purchased some Metro turbo rods in very good condition to get the 1380 spinning again, Also as turbo gearbox in bits, but with the turbo diff which will give me the lower final drive I wanted, I think its 3.21:1 can't remember 100% now. Which should give me a slightly better motorway cruise.

Im home from uni this weekend so I may re start engine building then.

Oh the wheel arch fell off again, a track rod end is on the way out, the inner wings have split, it needs wleding behind the shock mounts, the front doughnuts are completly knackered, it keeps over heating and theres too much crankcase preasure so for extended high rpm it blows oil out of the breather, apart from that it's fine.

Nope, can't be arsed with it anymore, so much more important things to be getting on with, the points work so im going to leave them for now. I may just get a second hand metro electronic one, not sure yet.

Yeah we couldn't afford fold up chairs so got the chairs I had and slapped them on the roof and held them down with washing line.

I want an old school roofrack now. ha ha

Ben, i think that noise is your tappets, i had a similar noise right on the red line, and it felt like the car couldnt go any faster than that.

I'd double check the clearences just to be on the safe side :P

The colour is Honda Vivid Blue pearl. You see it alot on Jazz' and the new Civic.

Posted Image

Most people recognise it after looking at a honda.

And yes it has had one or two engine transplants.

Im on my 5th engine if you count the 1380 that never ran, but was in the car.

only on the 4th gearbox though, the current box is off my original 998 as is the bell housing. It's such a mis-match now I can't keep track, but ive got a new gearbox now from a metro turbo for my 1380.

So the car went on the road in Mid november 2007 February 2009 it was on it's 5th engine and was off the road for 3 months aswell. Im getting quite good at it now.

Valve bounce, going to dump the double valves and put in a set of springs off a cooper SPI head ive got. Thanks though. I did think to myself one of the valves might be sticking as it has such a lumpy idle, i'll look into it on the weekend, just trying to drive it without it exploding at the moment.

Ive written up a list of things I want to do after this weekend when I finsih uni, to get the car how I want and things that need to be done.

Replace doughnuts, I don't actualy have my hi-los on the front yet.
Get the 1275 to run better
Finish 1380 build
Replace a dodgy track rod end
Build my metro turbo gearbox
welding on the inner wings
Have a little wiring tidy
and colour code my arches
tidy up paint on mirrors
sort out the tiny bubbles peeking through under the headlamps

Fitted a new water pump today, straightened some of the fins on the radiator, and cleaned all the fins as there was some crud in there.
No pictures as who just wants to look at a water pump. :P

Tomorrow I may tackle some 1380 building, re-setting the tappets, and go to the local scrappers to buy an electric fan to fit in the inner wing to attempt some extra cooling.

Went to the local scrappers and got a metro radiator fan, bought a relay from the local motor factors and have now fitted and wired it up in the wing. What a pain it was too do aswell. But all done now, im going to get a temp switch for it so that it will turn on automaticaly and a tell tail light to know when it's getting warm. I don't have any pics as with the same as the water pump who want's to look at a fan?

Just gave the tappets a re set, they were way out, didn't realise the MG metro engine has different settings for inlet/exhaust. All set properly now and its rapid. Realy does go well, still valve bounce at 5.5k but that's down to dodgy springs in it I reackon. A hill I went up earlier at 65 maxed, went up just now starting slower at the bottom and went up at 74mph, I mean 70mph officer. Well happy it now idles correctly aswell so all good. Still running hot though.
