Looks good though. :P

Also, I haven't noticed that much difference with the flashing tape either.

Yeah, it worked on the bonnet when I had a steel one though. It probably does in modern cars, but minis make such a din anyway that we don't notice.

It gives a nice weight to the panels, so they don't ring through vibration. But I don't hear that ring of vibration, over just the mass of noise that comes through the bulkhead, hence the load of foam.

My car is the loudest i've ever been in, and i've sat in proper stripped track cars, I have no idea why it's so noisy.

Slotted most of it back together, the new clocks are a lot nicer to read.

I also fitted some solid tower mounts for the subframe, which might stop the floor from cracking again. hopefully. Traced a huge oil leak to a loose rocker box, so replaced the studs in the head and fitted some new fasteners to it.

It's a but quieter, more muted sound, but still loud as hell!!

So, I'll get the sound proofing for the engine side of the bulkhead, but then i'm out of ideas. Apart from fitting a bush on one end of my top solid steady.

Manifold gasket, or some kind of exhaust leak? The only time i've noticed mine get really loud is when the zorst had broken in half...

Naa the exhaust is all sealed nicely. It's alot to do with the solid steady and foam air filter I think, but you can still hear the churning of the engine, tappets etc

I have no sound proofing at all in Haggis. It is loud on full chat with the induction roar. But the car only gets used for weekend blasts and the odd event so dont really mind the extra noise. I can see why people fit extra sound proofing tho. Straight cuts do howl quite a bit.

My straight cuts arn't even in yet, this is why i'm debating whether to fit them or not.

It's alot nicer around town, but on the motorway, it's still bad. So that's something to work on.

its definatly that engine steady ben. the vast majority of the noise coming in it that rose jointed steady vibrating the hell out the bulkhead... the actual engine noise wasnt even that bad...

I do plan to butcher a standard engine steady, and put a bush on one end of it.

Blame tom

This is exactly why i got rid of my rose jointed adjustable steady, now I have an SPi steady with poly bushes and it makes a massive difference.

A little trick to cut down on noise coming from the tappets (i see you mentioned them in particular) is to use one of the thick alloy aftermarket rocker covers instead of a thin steel one, really does help. (don't know the spec of your engine dress up lol,... so apologies if you already have one of these fitted.)

Thanks yeah, I do have one of those alloy jobbies, but to be honest I haven't adjusted my tappets in months, and I've changed a head gasket inbetween then.

I'll remove the rose jointed steady and fit a bushed one, or try fit a bush to one end, as my bulkhead bracket broke off, and I welded it back on too high, so the standard bush won't fit back in. I'll sort something out for it. It's good to hear that it will make a difference from someone whos tried it, as when I fitted the steady, I fitted the 1380 at the same time, and wasn't sure if it was the engine, or the steady making all the difference.

In theory, the steady transmits all the vibration into the bulkhead, which im assuming would work like a big speaker cone?

I think, when I change my bonnet, I'll go for a steel one, and sound deaden it, that should make a decent difference, and look better I hope.

Cheers mate
Ben

I've got a Db meter for my phone now, it won't be very accurate, but should provide a benchmark and give me some re-assurance that im making it quieter.

Yes it does make a lot of noise, I needed it for the extra clearance due to my inlet having a strange angle that pushed the carb miles out..... the SPi steady bars are slightly longer and do that for me,.... seriously, that steady bar was the shiniest thing i ever bought, but probably one of my overall worst buys. All i could ever hear was clunk clunk clunk.

Nearly a month since i've looked at this. The mini is still going strong. I still need to send my megajolt back to Autosport labs, just havn't had the time.

I bought a daily car now i've finished uni and need something more modern to get me around a little more reliably.

The mini hasn't been touched a lot recently, just been driving it. I've also moved to a new flat, which doesn't allow parking for 1 car easily let alone 2!! So i've put my name down to have it on the stand at gaydon. I'll try tidy it up a bit before then, but after that it might have to be put to bed for a bit as I can't afford to store it here.

So yeah, i'm still here, and the mini is still alive.
