When giving the suspension on the car im building a quick once over i noticed some slack in the drivers side track rod end, Its non genuin, The slack was in the vertical pin to the steering arm. Unfortunately the thread in the nut had let go, anyone any ideas what thread it is on the pin? I thought it would be 3/8ths UNF but my die dosent seam to fit it. The outer size of the old nut was 11/16ths But it may well be metric

Anyone? nothing in my nut / bolt hoard seems to fit.

You're right, should be 3/8" UNF

I suspect the thread has been damaged... for the cost of a replacement track rod end I'd not bother with it and renew it...

thread on the stump looks good to be honest, and its WELL off a 3/8th thread, thread wise, size across the diameter looks good.

I think its due to it being non genuine, as opposed to the correct genuine one.

hmmm bogies.

Shouldn't be a problem really it's a fairly common size used on japanese cars and bikes. My concern is why it has metric threads, all the pattern parts i've fitted to minis so far have still used the correct sizes so i'm thinking you might have the wrong track rod end fitted, late metro or similar maybe. you'd be amazed how many people will fit parts just because "it looks near enough"

i know that track rod ends from ford escort, orion, and fiesta fit a mini and oil filters from a skoda fit on to later model mini's

it is not THAT easy to find mini stuff here in sweden as basic parts such oil filters and track rod ends are not kept in stock at the local motor factors and have to be ordered and can take several days

i know that most people here in the uk are able to get the parts off the shelf but this might be of help to someone in a crisis

bought from minispares definately intended for minis, its a brand new part.

ive spoken to a couple of people now who have seen similar on non genuine track rod ends.

998dave, if it was my car it would of been genuine bought first time, i would of also thrown it out and replaced the lot when the nut stripped, but as its my brothers car who is a student... the pennies are being watched

and a new nut costs a lot less than a track rod end.

I was just suggesting.

Fair enough, a new nut it is, try minispares for it? you can probably pm [email protected] with the part number and ask him what nut you need.

Or find one on a Metro or something else.

My concern is why it has metric threads

track rod ends often have a whole range of threads, especially non-standard ones...

made cheap, sold cheap and quality/standards is hit and miss.

i have come across all different sizes and forms :s

Replaced mine, now one wheel leaves marks when turning... Screwed it in as many turns as I did to unscrew it...any hints on adjustement?

I would be very seriously concerned about the strength and safety of what is clearly a bogus part, and demand a refund from the supplier. Track rod ends are relatively cheap. How do you value human lives, possibly your own? There are other dangers too, arising from the taper on a modern metric component probably not matching the Mini's steering arm.

Counting the turns or marking the position only works to put the same TRE back on that you took off, there is little chance that any replacement will be threaded exactly the same as the old one! You need to take it to get the tracking set if you don't have the gear to do it yourself. You can get close with various home methods but it really needs a proper alignment. Make sure the rack is centered and the wheel dead ahead on the column before you get it done.

Checked and it is indeed a bit different, used minisport/spares replacement... Is the amount of turns different for every.car?
Any idea howmuch a 'tracker' would charge to do it?
