Hi all, this might have come up before but I cant seem to find it with a search.

Can anyone tell me the easiest way to remove the little roll pin connecting from the back of the engine to the gear selector rod?? I have tried a few things like hitting it with a hammer & punch but it doesn't want to budge. Do I need a tool of some sort or a bigger hammer :) ?

Cheers

You're pretty much going to have to just keep on hitting it with a hammer, though I've found some heat has helped in the past and some PlusGas/WD40.

Use 'something' flat without a point in the pin's (outer) diameter and drive it out using a hammer.
(Anything pointed makes the pin go stuck very tight!)
Lubrication, as mentioned, helps it.

Hope this is of some help :)

Cheers,
Jan

also put the gearbox into reverse, makes for a better angle of attack at the roll pin nearest the box...

Just the hammer and a roll pin punch im afraid mate. 3/16" roll pin punch is ideal.
The roll pin might put up abit of a fight but just keep tapping away.

Personally, when I had got the roll pin out I replaced it with a stainless steel bolt with nyloc nut of an apropriate size. So the secont time I had to take my engine out it took about a minute to take out.

hi
sorry to hijack this thread but ime having the same problem aswell, i managed to budge the horizontall pin (nearest the gearbox) about 3mm but then the punch sheared and a small bit has got stuck in the inside of the pin and now it wont move at all ARRRGH. i heard that the verticle pin is even harder to move but i think this is my only option, how much does a bit of heat help???

While were on the subject, does any one know of a good way of getting the roll pin back in?

Roll pin back in is an easy one...

Use a pump wrench and squeeze it in...

I've done this 4 or 5 times now and ive found by far the easiest way is to use a precision screwdriver like the one pictured below

if you get the right size one, the black pointy but will slide through the role pin, and the shoulder of the silver bit will sit on the roll pin itself, this keeps it aligned and also doesn't damage the roll pin. Couple of sharp blows and it's out...

can you get it into all gears with the bolt ?

Yeah no problem at all. To start with I just had the stainless bolt dropped in with no nut. The only way you could get it in/out is in revers I think (it a while since ive had it out) anyway since then ive machined a stainless clevis pin that again just drops in and is a nice snug fit. never had any problems with it and is so quick to take out and put back in. I can get you a photo if you like.

Wayhaey you were right, HIT IT HARDER! After using the correct punch and a bigger hammer and selecting reverse (cheers GW) it came out in seconds. I've got the engine out and half stripped already, now I just have to split the block and G-box and crack on.

Cheers All

Well here we have a thread resurrection of note!

Currently working on the final bits and bobs before i take out my engine, i have been stumped by my gear selector roll pin (nearest the box) I have the correct punch, good hammer ect. However there is nowhere for the pin to go/exit the rod. The angle of the rod means the pin would wedge against the GB/ rod above. Rather than the pin being aligned from one side to the other, its aligned up and down.

I am trying in third gear, advice given at the time.

Would reverse give the pin room to move, or is something not quite right ?

Any ideas ?
