My 1st big test faces me today, I'm getting the train from Liverpool Lime Street to London Euston, then I'm riding from Euston to Liverpool Street so I can get home in Essex.

I'm going to be riding in Central, in rush hour. Something I've done thousands of time on my brakeless BMX, but it suddenly seems daunting on my fixed.

ooh, good luck!
i live neer sheffeild, and if i get the train, then bike from the station to climbing or where ever, i hate it!

well it is good fun.
but i hate the busses.

oh, thats a good question, have you guys ( and girls if any read it ) took your anger out on a car or whatever if they cut you up.

i have kicked some ones mirror off, well done that a few times, but the most reacent ( spelling ) was when a car took my mate out on a round-about and lookeed back, saw my mate was layed out with half of his skin on the road, so i kept going, ( my other mates stayed there with him but i was realy *Drunk or yellow human water* off )
just got neer him, he stopped at trafic lights so i raised my leg up, and took his mirror off, and told him to go back and say sory, and he did haha.
i hate people that do summet, and are to scaired to say sory.
Dont mean to sound ******* ish, but i really do hate people like that. pft.

i also pushed the engine cut out butten on the side of a bus.
wqas going alond the side of him ( on his left ) and the was in the right hand lane, and was cuming into the left ( where i was ) there was a small gap in trafic, and he went for it, so i pushed the butten, haha.
it made him wunder what was happning, but he did say sory, he couldnt see me.
but i said sory to

Well London was interesting, said hello to some people on fixed going to Critical Mass. Almost got taken out by a Jeep Cherokee, proper back wheel in the air rolling stoppie moment... Glad I fitted that front brake! Haven't ridden in London for about 6 months so got a bit lost but I really enjoyed it. I need to sort my brake out, or perhaps I'm riding wrong but I don't feel confident going super fast yet. I'll properly open her up on a long straight but when there's traffic I don't quite trust my stopping ability.

Could anyone tell me how easy it is to swap a chainset over from one bike to another, if it is possible at all?
I have an old 1970's raleigh road bike with two big cogs on the front, the bike however is very old and after having been stored in a shed for two years has split tires, a bent wheel and the brakes don't work.
Some of my mates go out on a Friday afternoon and I was wanting to go with them, was looking around for cost of new tires/brake pads/wheel etc and found a road bike on gumtree for £70, bargain. Two months old, the guy had bought it when he lost his driving license for a bit, then never used it.
Only problems are...
A. It's a medium frame, I could do with a longer seat column
B. It's 21 speed I think, and the cogs on the front are the type found on any bog standard bike, and I can't keep up with my friends, all of whom have the two massive cogs on the pedals.

Should I be able to change the cogs and perhaps pedals from the raleigh to the new bike?
I know I will have to raise the front gear selector but will this need to be the one from the raleigh, or should I be careful and only use the top two gears of the new bike one.
Also where could I get a longer seat shaft from?

Thanks,
Ben

mmm, well I'm not too hot on the compatibility of bits but you should be able to see if the cogs fit quite easy.

most new bikes have removable chain-rings so if the old bike has removable ones then its just a case of un-bolting them and seeing if they fit. if the old bike has fixed cogs then you will have to change the whole thing, cranks and all.

i think the derailleurs are interchangeable, the only thing you have to worry about is the amount of travel it has. too much is not a problem as they have limiting screws on them.

i think the main thing is to match the cogs and the chain, the new systems are designed to work together and the cogs have loads of little ramps and stuff to help with the gear changes.

also the gap between the rear chainstays can effect the amount of gears you can have at the back.

the simplest thing to do may be to fit a new "big cog" on the newer system.

also check your local library for good bike maintenance books :D

i find this place is good for parts .....chain-reaction cycles

If your current seat pin doesn't raise to your required level, then the frame is probably just too small for you. A longer seat pin (if you find one) will only raise your centre of gravity & make you unstable & uncomfortable.

B. It's 21 speed I think, and the cogs on the front are the type found on any bog standard bike, and I can't keep up with my friends, all of whom have the two massive cogs on the pedals.

Find out what cranks you have & buy some bigger chainrings (front cogs) that are compatible. It will be worth taking a pic & emailing it to a shop (like chainreaction, as ANORAK posted) and seeing what they have in stock. If you change the chainrings, you'll need a new chain too.
