was out on the bike today (warning: I'm now wearing the shorts. not a nice sight ;D ) around stanford hall area (as always) and saw an aston martin being filmed.

it was tailing a camera car and kept doing those fancy overtaking shots, they kept going back and forth along the road i was on, so if anyone spots a reveiw for a dark grey aston martin on the TV in the near future... look out for a pale legged cyclist :D

Oh yes, did anyone get a place on the L2B bike ride ???

Okay, so i'm really pi@@ed off now! Riding to work on monday morning, pull away from the lights and BANG! Chain locks up. Manage to get up the kerb and onto the path and it turns out my chain has sanpped again! I'm a seriously not happy now with this bike.

Now it hasn't just snapped in one place, it's snapped in two! What do i have to do to keep this bike running?! It's not as if i thrash the thing and it's not a born and bred, super carbon fibre velodrome bike where you can only use it indoors. Chains aren't supposed to snap 3 times after 200 miles.

Personally i think a new chain is in order from the shop so i'm going to ring them up and see what they say. If they don't give me a new chain i think i'll ask for my money back on the whole thing. Not happy with the reliability of this bike.

Apologies, rant over.

Andrew

mmm, thats very strange :D

just a thought but your not doing anything you shouldn't with it are you ? such as riding on the two small cogs, or the two large ones ???

i know that using a chain at such angles can wear it out quite quick, just a thought :(

It's usually in the middle to the small (8th) on the back and the big one (3rd) on the front.

On 8sp it wouldnt bebad enough to snap it 3 times in 200 miles. What lubricant are you using?

I have been told I have been I am entered in a club 10mile TT in mid-july, on a local road that I have ridden hundreds of times! Better get training this week.....Been off my bike for nearly a month now. This is my first club ride too!

What do you mean it wouldn't be bad enough? I'm not getting at you i just don't understand what you mean lol.

I use GT85 to get the grime and stuff off. Wipe that off then put on some bike lube (forgotten the name) onto the chain and sprockets and give it a couple of turns.

Am i doing anything wrong? Not too clued up on bike maintenance because i haven't had one in years and never had a road bike before either.

Thanks,

Andrew

An 8speed gear setup is narrower than a 10speed cassette. 8speed can wear quicker if you run it in the "wrong" gears, but even like that you should get thousands of miles if you maintain it correctly. Soounds like bad luck, or a faulty chain, or both.

Yeh i think it's a faulty chain aswell. Going to get him to change it anyway.

Cheers,

Andrew

P.S. Good luck for the ride with the club, i think you might just need it being off the bike for a month lol.

My chain had about 150 miles on it and snapped a few days ago, had to make a road-side repair with nice oily hands.

just to clarify.... it is not recommended that you run the bike in the two "gears" that put the chain on opposite sides of the cassette and cranks as it puts the chain at an angle that it's not designed to work at.

this pick will make it clearer....

but as said, on a road bike the difference would not be that bad.

got any bent teeth on the cranks ??? chain not compatible with cranks ??? chain too tight??? chain too loose??? derailers set wrong???

I'm just running through anything that comes to mind now. it may be worth measuring the chain to see if it has stretched at all, I'm sure if you search the Internet you will find something that will tell you how to do this *willy*

here you go... click

I'll check the crank for bent teeth tonight when i get in from work. I have a digital vernier gauge at home so i'll check to see if it's stretched tonight aswell. It's a 9sp chain on a 8sp gearset. I don't know whether they are suitable but thats how it's sold so it should be :S.

I wish i could check the derailers but i wouldn't know whats right ands whats wrong lol.

I have ran my bike like in the pictures but not for long. Maybe that could be the cause but i doubt it because i'm usually in top gear for most of my ride.

Thanks,

Andrew

That could be your problem, I am SURE 8speed chains are wider than 9speed? They are definately more expensive, so different. This difference could well be why it snaps!!
