well i know these are not road bikes but i just wanted to finish the suspension bike story.....

these are the two bikes i was given, typical cheap suspension bikes with horrible frames and forks but at least the red one had half decent brakes and shifters...

well my daughter wanted me to make her a "bouncy bike" and although the red one was the better bike it was too big for her so the blue one had to do.

i stripped the red one down and used its metal brakes on the wife's bike to replace her awful plastic ones and also swapped the "flappy paddle" shifters over to replace her awful twist shifters that she hated. the wheels are also a little better than hers (just goes to show how cheap the wife's bike was  ) so will be swapped when I've re-done the bearings and tweaked the spokes.

i also used its handle bars on my hybrid to replace the ones i shortened when i was using it as my main bike.

i managed to sort enough working parts to sort the blue bike out, fitted the brakes from my wife's bike, new cables,a seat and two tyres i had lying around from when i refurbished my daughters other bike, and i binned the front shifter as it was completely shot (she manages much better with just gears on the back and i can always change the front by hand).

well its all together, working and safe and she can chuck it about as much as she likes. the next thing will be to strip it down and repaint it in some girly colours and it could really do with new tyres i guess. should look quite smart then :)

not bad for a couple of freebies :w00t:

Riding into work again tomorow gents. Can't wait to be honest :P. It's the first time i've been able to get out on it without worrying if i'm going to slip on some black ice . Just pumped the tyres up to a nice 120 psi so should be a nicer ride tomorrow than the last one.

It's only about 10 miles but it's quite hilly and rough roads in parts.

Well it took me about 40 minutes to get there and 35 to get back. Both good rides aswell which i was happy about and it didn't rain :). Feel so much better tonight for doing it aswell. Not feeling like a slob anymore lol.

Was talking to my friend (who also has a racer - GT GTR Series 3) and i suggested the idea of us doing the coast to coast from here (middlesbrough) to whitehaven and back. This is in 2 days ofcourse and he seemed up for it so it looks like i'll be doing 240 odd mile bike ride in the summer. Should be a good laugh and hopefully raise lots of money for charity :).

Not got a pump yet, saw this one:

http://www.chainreac...x?ModelID=28858

Similar to the one suggested a few pages back but it has a gauge on it. It says it fits presta and schrader valves but do you need an adaptor to fit a presta valve to this?

Thanks,

Andrew

that looks like an interesting pump, you will have to let us know how it performs

just a bit of an update... been riding each weekend and now quite comfortable again, 35 miles last weekend and only got a little sore in the last 3 :ermm:

and due to our astra now being off the road I'm having to car share "and" bike share with the wife, which means i now drive half way home and cycle the rest ;)

News on the pump ... it's okay. It's a bit fiddly to seal but once you get it it's okay. It doesn't seem to want to go past 100 psi without a struggle but i don't mind that because the roads near me aren't great so it takes out some of the bumps.

those pumps are amazing
when you have to pump up out on the road you can get them to high pressure quite easily

Think i've got used to the pump now. I can get fairly high pressures with it and it's not too difficult.

Anyway i rode to work again today and averaged 17.14 miles/h (according to my calcs lol), which i think is pretty decent considering it was raining this morning and the condition of the roads aren't great in my area. If we had nice smooth roads i'm sure i could get 20. Plus there's a lot of hills so that slows me down a bit too. But still 17(.14 :)) is good for a new rider i think :w00t:.

Thanks,

Andrew
