I have realy got to sell my Road Team bike now, dont have space for it in the new house! There is an ad in the for sale section...... After less than 300quid for it, less wheels.

Slid out on black ice on Monday. Lacerated my forearm and the muscle fascia. Hurt like hell! Getting back on my bike for the first time today. Going to take it nice and easy!

Went out for a little ride today lads, one of the best days without big winds i've had in a while.

Needless to say i thought i'd develop power today so i did a round trip of 37 miles and a average speed of 19mph! Sick sick sick!!! Seriously, i can't remember the last time i was able to sit around 25mph for most of the time, didn't come out of big ring once today..

Seriously, guys, rides like today would make me quit my job and never get off a bike O_O

Looks like a nice big ride!

Was just me and my buddy riding the other day, so its easy to get quite slack and take it easy.

That said, without completely wasting yourself its hard to chain gang it most of the time, stupid british weather!

well Ive not been doing so well these last couple of weeks but I'm putting that down to two things, possibly....

1. I've only been doing one ride a week and i don't think this is anywhere near enough to keep my body used to it.

2. I've lost half a stone since starting back on the bike and just maybe most of it has come off my bum. well the result is that i cant ride for mare than 20 miles without getting seriously uncomfortable on the saddle. :)

well i decided the bike was two streched out for me so i bought a shorter stem, and then completly refitted the bike position which didnt actually need much more than moving the sadle back a bit. i did nowever move my cleats back about 8mm on the shoes which seems to have hepled with the numb right foot that i get if i push too hard.

well i did another quick 20miles yesterday to try it all out and it seems a lot better but im still getting saddle sore :P

i read somewhere on the internet that a saddle thats too soft can cause problems on a road bike and sometimes a firm sadle can help, i guess its like having a bed thats too soft?? any ideas on this.

i've seen a nice saddle down halfords for around £35 that seems better, but how do you spend that much on the off chance that it will suit you ??? i know everyone is different and will need a different type of saddle but where do you start ????

this is my saddle, typical cheap one  im thinking its far too soft ????

Do you wear padded shorts? I definately do for any ride.
As for saddles the only way is to try a few out, I use Fizik's they are very good. However as suggest selle italia are good, notorious for being hard as nails though.
Ps your bum takes about a week to get used to a new saddle.

It is far too expensive for most people's budget! I wish I could afford one. I just thought you'd like to see some saddle porn... hehe.

Seats... Wrong one.. sore bum, right one and you never think about it.

Not a big fan of the sella jobbies, many bike shops now have them as test saddles so you are able to just go in and get one and use it for a bit.

Like the other chap, im a Fizik fan myself, they just seem to suit my little bottom.

If a saddle is £90 and you've used it and find it comfortable, then buy it. Save up however you can and buy it, otherwise you wont be able to spend the time in the saddle.

I'd much rather spend £200 on a saddle that suits, then buying a new crankset to save 40 grams or something.

Had this discussion with a friend the other day, the last seat i bought was my Fizik Gobi for the MTB, these come in at the £80 mark. My friend also uses these and we both said that if the credit crash kept on going and the saddle was like £160, we'd still buy it.

I'm not rich, but think about it, a decent set of padded bib tights is £90... match that with a good saddle aswell.. mucho lovely!

I find saddle sore is worse sat on the trainer then out on the roads but everyone is different.

Head on down to your local bike shop, if not send me a PM and i'll sort it out with my local one and send it to you in the post. EDIT: I might also be able to get a little discount for you, im pretty friendly with a few of the shops down here cause i find myself in them so often!

Mark@LCS, i totally agree with the principal of what your saying, after all the saddle is probably the most important part of the bike when it comes to rider/bike interaction and its not that I've been looking at cheap cheap ones either but with the way things are at the moment i cant justify going out this week and spending that much money, not with two MOTs and road tax licences coming up >_<

saving up, now thats not a bad idea :-

however i've just got back from a 30mile ride and it went rather well. being on holiday this week i've been able to go out every other day and its amazed me how much difference its made. to combat the saddle sorness i stopped every 10 miles and had a couple of minuotes off the saddle and it seemed to work, not ideal but i actually got round in relative comfort. in fact there were times when i got that "feeling" you were talking about and concentrating on "spinning" properly is helping.

so maybe the lack of time on the bike has been the problem although i stll need to look into the saddle. commuting is not really an option for me and not really what i want from the bike so i guess im going to have to commit to evening rides in the dark. now that the snows gone it should be possible :P

i guess i was a bit down about the whole thing last week, and its true that your state of mind plays a big part in your perfomance. now... im happy again ;)

PS: been given two cheap and nasty full suspension bikes this week, as in cheap and nasty frames, but the brakes and gears on one of them are quite good was going to rob them for the wifes bike but now the daughter wants me to build her up a good "bouncy bike" out of the two of them. thats should keep me busy this afternoon :ermm:

Sounds like you will have a busy evening.

Went out for a ride myself today, im finding my training is going more in the direction of time in the saddle and naming a place and cyling to it, rather then saying "yea, im doing 60 miles before i come home".

Rode over to a place called Winterbourne today using back roads and what not. Thouroughly enjoyed it, only done i'd say 25-30 miles, somewhat hilly, but still a short distance. That said, was satisfying to ride over to a place i've never riden to before, got to explore some old terrain in a new light if you will.

As for your stopping for a few mins to releave the bum, have you tried just getting out the saddle and doing a little power burst every 15 mins or so? will releave the pressure off your bottom and bring that blood flying round your legs. Obviously, keep the cadence low so you don't knacker yourself but it might mean you can stay on the bike for longer.

Anywho, i'll pop into the bike shop soon and see what i can find out even if you don't take the offer up. The other thing is maybe adjust the angle slightly and see if that makes you any better off? I've been convinced in the past mine is perfect, i tilt it a bit and omg, the pain! Then sling it back the other way a touch more and ahhhhhh... the sweet spot!
