Ive always wanted to have an internal linkage for a few reasons.. but how is this best approached.. my engine is pretty solid so i shouldnt come across too much trouble with it jumping out of gear, but what is the method used by the competitors?

diagrams would also be good...

Cheers

Easy peasy, done it on a mates car. You need two UV joints same internal diameter as selector rod, two extra roll pins and a flat punch (or similar) to remove and replace the roll pins.

Remove selector rod and remote box(by removing roll pin at both ends, and unbolting remote selector box from its mounts on underside of exhaust tunnel).

Put universal joints at either end of your selector rod (fixing with two roll pins) then offer it up to gearbox to figure out where you hole in floor/bulkhead needs to be.

Cut hole

Attach rod, through hole, onto gearbox fixing with a roll pin

Then attach rod to remote selector box, again fixing with a roll pin.
Let the selector box rest on exhaust tunnel
Then attach it in that position.

the issue then if you do not retain the steady rod, unless your engine and selector are solid mounted there is a chance that you will pop out of gear under hard deceleration or acceleration and it may be hard to select a gear. The

on my mini (not an a-series) i have mounted the shifter internally. it workes on teh same principles, i.e. 2 rods. what i did was rubber mounted the mechanism inside the car, and brought the 2 rods up to the selector. you could do the same, bringing the stabiliser rod up as well as the moveing rod. and cause the houseing is on the rubber it wont move out of gear.

only trouble could be the handbrake position.

Edited to inclide this(excuse the mess, was a WIP at the time): -

Shows that the normal mini bobbin mounts and bracket that hold the selector box UNCDER the car clear the hadbrake thro the origional mounting holes!

I bought 2 1/2" drive socket set UJ's and used the female halves to make one joint, cut the selector rod about 3" fromt he gearbox end and weld the ends into the UJ making sure you keep the role pin holes in the same alignment they were in originaly (I made a jig out of a peice of wood and 2 nails). If you don't get them lined up to how they used to be, then the gearstick housing won't sit straight and you'll loose gears.
I cut the rod down a bit to keep the over all size the same once welded up as when it was original. Cut a hole just above the tunel were it joints the bulkhead and conect the UJ end of the shaft to the 'box and the other end back into the gear stick housing. Because the housing has been liften heigher than its normal place, I needed to cut about 5mm off the housing were the steady rod bolts in to compensate for the fact its a fraction closer.
I used the original housing hanger bracket and turned it upside down and bolted it all back inside the car.

I tried another version of it with 2 UJ's, but it didn't work so ignor the UJ nearest the gearstick housing in the pics.

My girlfriend has just bought me the KAD internal gear kit for my birthday, bit expensive but the quality is excellent, it's adjustable and comes with a shortened quickshift. Cool

................ ill make one

whats was your reason for 2 uj's not working? was it because the remote box was not solid-mounted?

i looked at it from Al's POV and 2 uj's will work. i didnt take into account that i would solid mount the remote box. lol, silly me.
