well now that my mini is back on the road i have noticed that the temp doesnt seem to get very warm. now i could just pull the thermostat and check what is in there but i like to have the parts available before i do anything....so what is the beat to have for hot weather?

i have a spare 81 deg.

It isnt that hot here at the moment but i did drive it in a fair bit of heat the other day and it still didnt get what i would call warm enough.

Depends what is in there, standard should be an 88, mine didn't need anything lower at all last summer, even on the hotter days. Wouldn't go any less than the 81 for now though

well at the momit is just a standard 998(aactually it is probs more like a stage one actually), in the weather i am in is it better to have a higher temp stat or a lower one?

I am also going to put on a 6 blade metal fan

The temperature of the thermostatis independat of the ambient air temperature. if the thermostat is 88 it will controll the engine temperature to 88. if its a 72 it will control it to 72, whether high or low ambient.

Problems with overheating are not down to the temperature of the thermostat, but more likely the lack f heat rejection in the rad (rad not big enough)

It is more likely that the 88 thermostat will be able to maintain that temperature in a high ambient compared to a 72 in a high ambient. Thye reason for this is that there is a greater temperature difference in the radiator between coolant temp and air temp.

If you are running unleaded, then the 88 is pretty much required to give better and more complete combustion of the fuel, 80 is aceptable, but if its an SPi or MPi then the 88 is a must irrespective. Gone are the days of fourstar fuel and running the engine at 74c to give more power, but people still seem to do it and its usualy the more senior persons amung us.

so are you better off with your engine running just under the 'N' point of the gauge, or a bit over?

take it out?

no, according to minispares, if you take it out it'll cause overheating between 3 and 4, and the engine will also probably run cold.

thinking about that the head gasket on my golf blew between three and four, took the engine apart to fix it and found out that the thermostat was missing.

procket my issue isnt overheating but the engine not getting hot enough(according the gauge reading) looks like i will just have to pull it and see whats there.

its a 998 carb at the moment.running unleaded. the other stat i have is an 81 deg one.

That might not be, but overheating 3+4 will cause major problems!

Miniboo, I would run an 88, and see how you go. If everything else works as it should, this shouldn't cause any problems

Having said that Simon, I have been reliably informed that ALL the Miglia boys run without a thermostat and no problems :P

wouldnt the miglia's water pump be flowing alot faster making the water flow through the water jacket in the head more efficient, erradicating the problem?
