After having many members asking the same here is an over view of some of the things you sholud check are:
:turn: Thermostat
:turn: Fins on water pump for rotting away
:turn: Bubble in the radiator
:turn: Radiator blocked/nakkered
:turn: Water pump
Some of the first things you can try
Flush the cooling system out, get some rad flush , run the car untill hot (it usualy says somthing like 20 mins) drain it all out , and then i conect a hosepipe to the heater hose with a jublilee clip and leave the tap run for half an hour or so , this flushes the system out from the dissconected end of the heater pipe , (this is good to do once a year anyway). When you refill you can check if the rad itself is blocked by running the car till warm and run your hand over the surface of the rad , any cold spots are a blockage .
secondly
If this still doesnt work then here are a couple of extra things to think of and check.
Headgasket may gone, check for what looks like "mayo" under the filler cap
Have you tryed a compresion test ? it could be the head gasket .
Is your fan working/running at the right speed? Also, is you temp sender/gauge working propperly?
Stupid Question, is the water level correct?
also is it losing water? you might have a leak
also, how high is the gauge going? to the top?...or just slightly over the 'normal' mark?
Whilst the gauge is above normal look under the bonnet, look for signs of hissing and or bubbling coming from the cylinder head, yep, ive done that one too! turned out to be a snapped head stud, meaning the head had lifted on one corner!
check your by pass hose about the water pump, ive had this go before.
if anyone else has any other ideas on things to check please post below.
or things that have happend to you.

One of the first things i noticed if my Mini was getting low on water the heater would suddenly go cold, so if you are driving around and your heater suddenly blows cold , Time to check the water

Is the heater tap on the head open? If it is closed, it stops the extra ciculation through the heater, giving the water less time to cool. I have mine open all the time, I have detached the Heater tap cable and have a small peice of fuel hose on it to stop it from shutting now.
Also, what fuel you are using could be a factor to take into account, If your valves and seat are getting excesivly hot, then its going to have a knock on effect with your water system.
