Well i made a post about a month ago saying that i would be making up a cheap digital speedo. I got the idea from another member and when i made the post i got about 6 PM's sking how how im planning to do it, etc...

Basically im using a bike speedo in my mini. When i first read about this i was amazed and looked in to some speedos's because i didnt think they would read that fast but i found that the majority of them read up to atleast 150MPH. As im just testing this out at the moment i wen to Halfords and brought the cheapest speedo they sell, which was about £6 or there abouts.

Once i had the speedo i decided that i wanted it to be mounted in a 52mm guage, so i used an old smiths gauge that i wasnt using anymore, So i took the chrome ring off and removed the glass. I then removed the guts of the gauge so i now had a bare 52mm shell. As the bike speedo didnt fit in the gauge i had to grind the corners down a little (mainly just rounding the edges off) once this was done the bike speedo would now fit, however i came ac cross my next problem which was the bike speedo was to thick, so i had to grind part of the back off the 52mm gauge casing, i left some of the back still though so that the bike speedo wouldnt fall out of the back. Once this was done i put it all back together but i added the touch of putting the smiths logo back in lol.

This is where i am at with mounting the bike speedo in the 52mm gauge, however im going to black out the side parts of the glass so that only the screen is visible.

I then started out by finding a place to mount the magnet and sender, first of all i was thinking about mounting in the rear drum, but i thought maybe the pot joint might be a better place. As i had a engine that im rebuilding i thought that it would be better to mount it on the pot joint because i would have alot of space to messabout getting a bracket made, etc anyway, i decided that i would mount it on the passenger side.

I then set about making up a bracket to mount the sender on, so i got the grinder out and cut a section out af an old door skin lol. Once i cut out the metal i put it in position and found where i would make the bend in the sheet, so that the sender could be mounted parallel with the pot joint.

Once i have made the 90* bend i found that i could get a better fit by cutting a section out the side of the bent metal that i would be mounting to the gearbox.

This would then be mounted like this:

Once i got this far it started to get dark, so i brought the bike gauge inside and decided to extend the cable going from the bike speedo to the sender:

Then sender will be mounted on my bracket like this:

This is as far as i got today, so tomurow all i have to do is mount the magnet onto the pot joint and drill two holes into the bracket, so that i can used the bolts shown on the gearbox to hold the bracket on.

Nope it doesnt light up at the moment, however im going to fit 2 LED or similar lights on either sides of the 52mm gauge casing. then ill run them of the sidelights...

Well my mini speedo is sooo far out thats why im fitting this, but i have been told by a few bikers that use them that if they use them on their bikes then they are very accurate, so i guess ill just have to hope. So when its fitted ill get my satnav out and that has an accurate speedo so ill work out how accurate it is from that :dozing:

Well i went out and finished the bracket off, so i drilled the two holes so that i could bolt it to the gearbox, i also frilled 4 holes around where the the sender will be mounted and ill cable tie these in place. This is how they secure them in place on a ike so i hope it will work for me lol.

(Ill sort out some pics soon and edit this)

I then went to get the magnet out and i seem to have missplaced it lol, just my luck, i was looking round everywhere but i still cant find it ;) so looks like im going to have to buy another speedo just to get the magnet.

But once that is done it shouldn't take more than 5 mins to fit

Yea im pretty pleased, mainly because i got my ass in to gear to bother to do it lol, once i started i found that it wasnt that hard, but it was a very big help having my engine that isnt fitted yet.

the gauge looks really good, but wont the size of your wheels in comparison to an average bike wheel make it read faster speeds than your going, as the magnet will take less time to go around (i think i just managed to confuse myself with that) - i dunno ill just be quiet :dozing:

shouldn't do because you have to program the speedo to tell it the circumfrence of your tyre is! that is why they are acurate as it works it out from that measurement and the number of rotations of the magnet!
