Seeing as a lot of people want to replace engines with Mg Metro ones etc i thought it would be a good idea to list the engines with what BHP they give? Does any body know the Most powerful A Series Metro Engine (Not the Turbo) and not a K Series (Gti Metro)

the most powerful production (ie not modified) normally aspirated a series metro engine was the mg type with the vanden plas coming in a close second. The mg gives around 72bhp @ flywheel

Indeed philster is correct. The vanden plas model has a basically MG spec engine (may even be identical), but they are quite rare so are often omitted from such guides and therefore missed out by many people! If you can find a vanden plas model, it will have an MG inlet manifold and a HIF44 carb, might have the MG camshaft (not sure) and it will have either a large valve head (like the MG) or it will have an unleaded head with regular size valves (again like the MG). Like I said the only thing I'm not totally sure about is the camshaft and pistons used.

Then there are a bunch of other metro engines, most of which are the standard high compression type (9.4:1 if i'm not mistaken). This is what makes up the biggest percentage of metro engines you see around.

There were a few lower compression engines (which are obviously less powerful), and the only difference with these was the bigger dish in the pistons. I THINK these engines were mainly used in metro van modifications.

There are quite a few guides out on the internet to metro engine numbers so you can figure it out, with quite a good guide of which engines are more desirable for power so there is really no point in me typing it all out.

Search for "metro engine numbers" in google, or go to ime.org.uk and there are a few articles there aswell.

A High compression metro engine will give about 65hp. Add another 7hp for a large valve MG engine. Low compression engine might make around 59? But the block etc. is the same in all of them so for a rebuild any engine will do (the cheaper the better).

the vanden plas is lower compression than the mg and thats the only difference i think.

There are two others to watch out for, the GTa and the Sport, both of which are the same spec as the MG, However those fitted with a factory unleaded head don't have big valves.

But unless you can find an absolutely mint example of a running metro, any engine you buy now will be considerably past its best and due for a rebuild, so what spec it came out of the factory with makes little/no difference.
