Model: Mini Cooper 1.3i
Year: 1991

Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible): hi, every now and then my 2nd gear pops out of gear, first i thought it was just me amagining things, but then my mates actually saw the gear lever pop out into neutral while i was driving.

ok so i was thinking there is something wrong in my gearbox, so i want to get the gearbox out and have a look if anything is worn or broken. how do i take the gearbox out, do i just unscrew a few bolts and drop it from the bottom or what. sorry im a novice to mechanics, but just dont want to have to pay a big lump of money to get it looked at.

anyone please?

To check the gearbox you'll have to lift the engine and split the block and gearbox out of the car. Not a five minute job and the gearbox is a complicated bit of kit and not something that a novice should touch. I'm the same as you and will always choose GuessWorks for my gearbox work.

I'm sure my Brother solved this on my Mothers '92 Cooper 1.3i a couple of years ago without taking the engine or gearbox out.

I will ask him.

He got back to me, miracle!

He replaced the detent ball and spring located in one of the diff end covers and this cured it.

ball: http://www.minispare...ty=pb&pid=37534 lists parts for spring and oil seal also.

But he said her's would also jump out of 4th, due also to worn engine mountings.
