Hi all

just planning my sound system with a twist, and am hoping for some advise!

My project mini is being built as a road leagal trackday/hillclimb car so dont require a stereo due to weight etc but wanting some sounds when im on way to event or shows so decided to create a removable system so will add progress as i go :shifty:

So far i have:
Kenwood head unit
Kenwood 2 of 6x9
Kenwood amp
12 inch sub
Ipod connection

I need:

MDF what thickness do i need? and where would be the best place to get it??

Thank you >_<

I build all my stuff from 3/4" as it dosnt resonate very much as its so stiff, but it may end up abit heavy for a removable system! If i were you id stick the headunit into a box with a 6x9 on each end and a power lead coming out to go into the cigaret lighter socker or whatever, effectivly just a car specific boom box!

Yer i see what you mean, could be quite neat providing you diddnt want to change tracks ;D although a remote would sort that out. Anywhere really, builders merchants that sell joinery supplies is probably the cheapest, otherwse B&Q or homebase or the like should be able to sort you out.

I try to use a local supplier, especially if you can give them a cutting list-saves loads of time and ensures a perfect straight edge.

excellent cheers guys looking at getting over bnq this weekend 18mm but seriosly worried about the weight and the only place i can save it, is in the box but if i go to 12mm i fear its going to resonate?! and be to thin?! ( I need to be able to lift it out on my own with removing passenger seat )

just collected my 12" sub :( 1st step

another question, once the box is made whats the best stuff to cover it in? and where do i get it!!
cancel the above found some on the bay >_<

You can cover it in loads of materials. Personaly, for me, the best thing about using MDF is you can spray it satin black or even with stonechip and it looks really good, thats what we use to cover most of our speakers at work with.

Otherwise carpet is usually the norm, but looks abit cheap in my opinion. Im into suede at the moment, so id probably have a go with that and some spray adehsive.
