I've got round to the last bit of putting my engine in...the wiring. I've put the battery live back on to the little black box thing on the wing (voltage regulator?!). And then wired the thick black cable back onto the starter motor. The wire to the alternator was a bit short, as the auto site lower down I guess it doesn't need to be as long as what it is for the manual!

Anyway, to my problem, the coil; I have one lead that goes off to what could be a capacitor or something similar, with a plate on the top, this lead isn't long, and I'm pretty sure its an earth, so I've bolted it to where the coil mounts on the bracket on the cylinder head stud.

Coming out of the loom I have another two leads, all white or white and black. One lead is made from two wires and the other is just one lead, I'm guessing they both go on the coil but don't know where!

I also have two more wires where the alternator connector comes out of the loom, one is green which I think would go to the temp sender, the other is white and black (might just be white) and I have no idea where it goes!

Can anyone help?

The wire which is 2 leads, is this not BROWN and white?
The black/white wires run from the dizzy to the coil, 1 onto the points in the dizzy, the other onto the coil where it fits (it should be a spade connector, 1 side of the coil is male, 1 is female connectors).
The green wire does fit to the temperature sender by the waterpump, the purple is the horn.

One question, the black box thing and an altenator are mutually exclusive, unless the guts of the regulator have been removed...

Ok, got some pictures...

Here is the black box on the inner wing...

Here is the wiring that comes out by the coil, as I said one lead with two white and black wires, one white lead, and just up from that a white and brown lead with no connector on it.

Here is the wiring that comes out by the alternator, the green wire, and another white and black wite, along with the black wire from the dizzy.

And here is the black wire that goes from the negative side of the dizzy to a little capacitor thing.

The black box thingy is the starter solenoid, so panic over ! (which should also have a white/red wire connected to the tab on the side, this is the feed from the ingition barrel for the start ! )

The one with TWO wires goes to the -ve side of coil, one feeds the dizzy and one the rev counter.

The one with White/brown is the +ve 12v feed to the coil, so connect to coil +ve. This should come live when the ignition is switched on.

The green wire goes to the temp send er and the black wire fron dizzy is connected to the white/black wire from loom...

Bearing in mind this was an automatic, have you removed the starter inhibitor from the loom ( use to stop you from starting the car unless in Neutral)

Haven't removed the starter inhibitor....

The black one from the dizzy, can I not just connect this directly to the coil?

Ok, I've just fitted new (second hand) starter motors, cable to starter motor, and a coil thinking one of them maybe broke. Nothing happening. I have the coil wired according to the following; lead with 2 whie and black wires to the negative, earth to negative, white wire (from fuse box?) to the negative. I've found out that the white and brown wire goes to the oil pressure sender. I don't have a electrical sender at the mo, so the white and brown wire isn't connected, neither is the water temp sender.

I've been round with a multimeter. I have 12v at the starter solenoid, and when I turn the key I get 12v at the starter motor. I have 11v at the positive side of the coil and 0.48 at the negative. Its a new battery.

When I turn the key all I know hear is the solenoid clicking. Nothing from the starter motor, now thinking I may have got a dud starter??

Also I've now connected the engine earth strap to one of the flyhweel housing bolts.

One more question. If I take the starter motor out but leave it connected should it still work when I turn the key as the two I've taken out haven't?

if u unbolt the starter from the car then it wont work unless u run an earth lead to it. what type of starter are you trying to use
