The twin hs2 carbs I am trying to fit are mounted on a manifold with the numbers 12g299 VAF cast into them and the number 594 stamped above. It has been suggested this is not a Mini manifold - can anyone confirm this?

the manifold you need is either,
AEG347
12G2463
AUE1014
That one you have looks far to long from the carb to the head part.

that would explain why I'm having trouble fitting it in the space available! Was told it had come off a mini racer but who knows?

That number is familiar. A thread about that casting number ran earlier this month. It's an MG-1100 manifold. It will put your twin carbs in the wrong position.
See this thread on this board. Inside that thread is a link to a more comprehensive thread at Mini Mania. The Mini Mania thread is worth a read if you plan on using this manifold.

Wow that was really useful - no wonder I've had such problems with these. Thanks.

Never mind the part number, I can tell from the photo that the angle is wrong! Mini manifolds are 30 degrees, that looks like a 10 degree manifold.
If it is a 10 degree you might get away with swapping the float bowl adaptors on each carb around instead of buying new ones, since the 10 degree spacer reverses to become a 30 degree. Depends on which spacers have been used, the alloy ones and some plastic types are non-reversible but the coloured rubber ones will make the swap. That is if I'm right and it is a 10 degree setup, it might not be.
Then you just need a manifold.
