HI All. my question to you is (without starting a fight) is halfords classic 20/50 oil ok for running in a new build there dosn't seem to be any information on the can just says that
it has a seal swell, additive as well.The guy from Halfords said it should be ok anyone know of this oil?

Thats quite a thick oil and for running in you want oil that isnt going to cause much friction between your new engine parts. I would reccomend getting some running-in oil from a motor factors personally, but they are just my thoughts...

Unipart green 20w50 is the best running in oil I have found. BigAdam uses this as a service oil, I don't think it's good enough for that unless you change it every 2000 miles really but that's just my opinion. It doesn't really matter if it's any different viscosity to what you would normally use, it does mater that it should have no friction modifiers or cleansing additives as these will prevent the rings bedding in properly. You need a good, basic, unmodified mineral oil with minimal additives of a good viscosity. Choose what you like so long as it complies with that.

I plan on using tesco's (how much cheaper can you get) for my running in oil. Got bugger all in it (as far as additives and modifyers are concerned) so should be good.

Hellfrauds stuff should be good too. I like the metal tin it comes in.

METAL TIN ONE IS THE ONE I HAVE PUT IN HAVN'T TRIED IT ON THE ROAD NO DOORS GLASS ETC. JUST REVVING IT IN THE GARAGE AT THE MOMENT.

Also, are you aware of the oil change intervals for the oil during running in? This is also certainly one of the most important factors.
No swarf at all during running in can be bad as there is no `past' to bed things like the rings etc.
But thats just my opinion.

When running in ( which on my engines is not very long ), I use the cheapest MINERAL oil I can find...

Ideally this should only stay in for a few 100 miles, then get replaced with the same cheap stuff, and again only in for a few 100 miles..

Some say 500 and 1000 miles for oil change, but IMO, that varies due to convinience...

Then stick in the every day oil, in mycase 10/40 Halfords Mineral ( comes in the Orange tubs ), I don't believe in pushing treacle round a new engine..

Which reminds me the current skoda advert makes me laugh when they are building the car out of cake and you see them filling the 'engine' with golden syrup... I just think of using 20/50 as much the same

Don't worry, give a 'cheap' 20W/50 a few miles and it will soon be a 10W/40 or lower !!!!

From my BMC 1960's book the oil for a mini is 10/30w. Low low looooow oil.
