While checking the water system I discovered that the little tube that screws into the head where the water pump hose attaches is rusty and broken.... I need to replace it. Do I need to remove the head to get it out or is there a trick to unscrewing it?
It seems quite stuck in there...

I'll admit I've never done one but my first thought would be to drain the system and then remove the water pump to see if you can unscrew it in situ.
Chances are though that the tube will be seized into the head and it will be a job best done on a bench.

yes i''ve already removed the water pump and radiator... I've discovered that it unscrews but it's tight and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to remove it without it becoming a bench job...

before you remove it, make sure you have one to replace it with as the thread is not a standard thread ( it's the same thread as the flywheel and pulley bolt )....

Ok, so this was indeed a bench job... the little bugger was well stuck in there so I had to drill it then tap out the bits of thread left in there... it's all nice and clean now and fitted a good 2nd hand one as replacement...
Now I need to put it all back together and fit the renault 9 alternator...

Right, so i've fitted the replacement by-pass screw in tube and was putting everything back togther... fitted the renault 9 alternator with a bit of modification and a spacer...
Put the head back and as I was turning the head bolts in to the required torque... one of the studs stripped the thread in the block.... It's an 11 stud block.. how important are the 2 extra bolts? more importantly, how should I fix this?
I guess option 1 is to fit a helicoil...
Option 2 is tap a bigger thread and turn a bolt into the bigger thread...
What would you guys do in this situation?
I really don't want to have to remove the entire engine...
