I just had a conversation with someone who is "in the know", who told me that the early 90's carbed Mini Sprite was fitted with a low compression & low powered engine, that was different from other 1275 models in the range. This is "news" to me, although it would explain why my '93 sprite was described as "underpowered" by the guy at the rolling road!! Has anybody else heard of this? If so, what sort of compression/bhp difference should there be between the sprite engine and a standard 1275?

Non cooper models have a base specification cam, and it is not the 998 cam, but that is another story. The compression ratio was 9.4:1

The cooper models had a slightly sportier cam compared to the non cooper models with increased compression ratio of 10:1. The combination of this with a slightly richer full throttle fueling and the ever so slightly shorter 3.2:1 final drive made the cooper models feel that bit more lively with a stated 10hp advantage over the non cooper models

there has been many 'standard' 1275 engines all of which have different power oputputs. A 'standard' 90's 1275 is the sprite model with a labled 53hp.

This has been covered many many, many times
