My right rear drum is rubbing and make a heck of noise while driving. I have adjusted the brake adjustment screw all the way in and out and still it rubs. any ideas?

I have also changed the following to try and get rid of the noise.

-New bearing

-New pads

-New drums

-new return springs

Is it catching your back plate? Try jacking it up and spinning the wheel.

Is the bottom spring on the right way round?  These can rub on the hub and make a right noise if fitted upside down.  Are the shoes the right way round?

Stupid question but how can I check that it is or isnt?

when I spin the drum with the wheels off it seems to tighten/rub on one specific spot.

Hi,

Reach behind and pull the hand brake arm towards the back of the car and spin the drum.

With the drum off look for shiny metal on the back plate where the drum fits in the recess.

Make sure the hub face is clean and smooth and the drum retaining screws are evenly tightened.

Cheers  :proud:

So I loosened the hand brake and played with the adjustment screw and the noise is gone. Not exactly pleased with how it was done as the pads are probably further away from the drum than they should be.

There should be a bit of drag on the drum from the shoes anyway, if your shoes are too far away from the drum you'll have excessive pedal travel. However, the shoes rubbing on the drum shouldn't be making enough noise to bother you when driving.

I set mine up so when I spin the wheel by hand, the drag of the shoes stops the wheel within 1 or 1 1/2 revolutions. This is normally 1 or 2 clicks back on the adjuster, from when the drum is locked solid. Too tight and you'll cook your brakes (and be slowing yourself down!)

I'd be ripping the whole lot apart and looking for shiny spots on springs or the backplate, removing all loose rust on the drum and backplate, and filing off the lip on the drum. Just double check everything and get the adjustment spot on, hopefully the noise will go away!

Noise is back!

So the noise existed before I replaced

-New bearing

-New pads

-New drums

-new return springs

-New hub

So what do I have left to backplate?

Did you check the brake shoe return springs? They fit BEHIND the shoe .. if they are in front the spring rubs on the hub and also pull the shows out of alignment causing them to rub constantly on the drum. They should be pulling the shoe back against the back plate.

If it is the drum on the back plate, that should also be obvious by the paint being worn away on the plate (and in extreme cases a hole in the pressed steel!)

I recently had to unseize the pivot on the internal hand brake lever, does it run free with the collet pin removed?

Yes the handbrake linkage is in the correct way, the small link which attaches to the handbrake cable must be at the bottom. For something to grind there must be tell tale marks somewhere - get out your magnifying glass and have a good look. Sure it isn't the split pin rubbing on the grease cover cap. Could be the rim of the wheel rubbing on the brake cable too.
