I did search and couldn't find anything specifically on how to set timing. I am a complete begginer when it comes to this so I'd appreciateany help. According to the Haynes manual for my mini I am to set the timing at 10º + 0º -2º BTDC at 1500 rpm. Could someone please explain what that means. How does this relate to the 750rpm idle speed it's supposed to be set at for base idle?

here is what you do I assume your talking about the dizzy drive shaft fitting. remove rocker cover and turn engine over in correct direction and watch no 2 valve open and close now before fully closed watch no 7 valve just start to move and stop now you can pop dizzy drive shaft as per haynes dia. now put dizzy in and look where rotor arm is pointing shold be pointing towards inbetween no1 and 2 spark plugs pop a dot of white paint on block opp rotor arm then refit dizzy cap now turn dizzy till no:1 spark plug lead is opp dot now you should be timed in. good luck

just use the figures (as you've mentioned) to suit your engine.

Thanks guys! As far as the numbers 10º + 0º -2º BTDC, how are those used with the timing marks?

It depends on what timing marks you car has, and what timing light you are using.

Older cars had the timing marks on the flywheel and you look at them through the inspection hatch on the flywheel cover. They had markings for: 15, 10, 5 and Top Dead Centre (TDC) which is marked as 1|4 as cylinders 1 & 4 are at TDC:

The newer type had one mark on the crank pulley and a couple of marks on the timing cover. (I've just taken this photo off the net, haven't personally seen this type). http://www.minifinit...hp?f=22&t=95316

In your case, "10º + 0º -2º BTDC" means that you need to line up between 8 and 10 degrees with the timing pointer with the engine running. BTDC means Before Top Dead Centre.

If you are using a basic timing light you connect it to cylinder 1 and adjust the timing so that the timing mark lines up with the correct advance for your engine. If the rpm set point is different to your idle speed, you can adjust the idle higher using the idle screw.

If you have a "dialback" timing light you can simply set the advance on the timing light to be 10º and adjust the TDC mark to line up with the pointer.
