If any of you own an SPi, at some point this might happen to you...as it did AGAIN to me recently. I was driving my 94 the other night and the dash lights went out. They came back on after a second or two and stayed on the rest of the journey. The next night, the never came on and then I notice a slew of other strange things. My fogs (now driving lights) would only work with the hi-beams and my switch illumination mod wasnt working. I set about tracing wires and ended up taking the entire dash out...all to find out that it was an inline fuse!!!
Maybe Rover cheaped out a bit when they sourced them? Maybe they should have just fitted blade fuses from the start? All I know is that these damn things have caused me more trouble then I care to remember. The trouble is that the fuse can become warm/hot and start to heat up the fuse holder. Over time, and many heat cycles the plastic get tired and starts the deform. Sometimes it molds around the fuse itself other times it pushes the non-sprung end into the recesses of the plastic. In either case, what can happen is the fuse loses contact with non-sprung end of the inline fuse holder and you have a dead line.
This is what happened to my dash lights. I have gone through and replaced a handful of the other inline fuse holders with similar (to keep it standard looking) type holders but of a better quality. Looks like i need to start replacing them all. This little problem has actually felt my car totally immobilized on two occasions when I first bought it. Well, hopefully never again!!
If you ever find a strange outage in power, dont only check the fuse but also that there is continuity when installed as well AND that the fuse and spring both move freely.
