I believe it is called deseaming. The removal of the guttering looks weird IMHO.

I like doing the vertical seams, I like keeping the drip rail if you want to do a two tone roof it gives you somewhere to break it up. However the shell I was faced with the drip rails were so bad I tried a go at the deseaming. I think overall I quiet liked it. Was a fair amount of work.

Ive always found myself in two minds about deseaming (the sides anyway) as i ive done the rear valance lip. But sides just seem to not do it for me. Think it loses its.....something... cant explain it ha.

It is a very marmite look in my opinion.

It does need to be done very thoroughly and with the upmost care to make it safe. Those external seams are a MAJOR part of the shells strength. You would need to try and do it in a way where the finish is as much metal as you can get away with. A thin coat of filler is fine to smooth out imperfections but you don't want inch thick filler

over the joins as it will crack and ruin your paint job.

Another point to consider when de-guttering the shell is the fact that without the gutter's, Rain water will just roll off of the roof and straight in above the door so be aware of that.

Just take a look around and do your research before you commit.

Ben

Thanks. I thought it turned out pretty nice too. It was an exercise in trying new things out that would still do okay when resold. I knew from the beginning I was not going to keep it. So I didn't get crazy with exotic colors, just clean, simple, powerful.

Ooooo very clean indeed :) That was my plan when i get my mini like a gunmetal two tone black roof and arches, because love how gray and black minis look but because my fav colour is orange id put the seems on the seats orange parts of the dash orange and the engine orange :)

I feel the seams on a mini are part of the charm, I own a deseamed 1275gt shell and part of the reason why I am parting with it is due to the deseaming. If I had a garage I would reseam it and restore the shell but I don't so its off.

But I dont like the look, especially not without the roof gutter

Are there ever any issues with MOT's when the front and rears are de-seamed / bumpers removed ? I'd love to do this on mine but want to be sure itll be legal.
